bipity bop! No research and got in to a more clinically oriented school...

I didn't realize so many people do research!!!

You still have to sift through a lot of BS though. Some people wash test tubes, others go the whole 9 yards, and there's a ton in between.

i really don't think it is necessary to do research to get accepted into dental school . I admit it is good but not necessary.

I washed tubes, helped set up the biochem lab at my school (like helped the teacher set up he program - not get out chemicals) but I did not consider any of that research. It was lab work. Those that do consider this stuff research have definitions mixed up.

what's the best way to get invovled with research if you've already graduted from undergrad? is it still worth doing or should the focus be on getting dental experience?

one piece of advice:
unless you want to get into one of the top 5 dental schools (since most of them ARE research based), do not do research b/c it would be such a waste of time/money/brain.

did u do any research or if you didn't did you have a lot of other dental experience? i don't have either really and am tryign to see what i shoudl focus on and if i should even bother trying to do both considering i am applying this cycle too! 😕

research experience will be good, if you dont, then it's ok. but, you must show your passion in community services like fund raising, local church, or any community services in your area.

one example: a D3 student from ucla, he has no research background, but he is very active in leadership activities, and lots of community services... he told us that, do what you like to do, and serve those in needs...😉

i love volunteering and def. have tons of that sort of things but a lot of it was in a hospital because it was easy to get into and i enjoyed it or with volunteer groups on campus but I didn't log those hours exactly

i guess that's why I was thinking about research because it's something that I have nothing of and I people often suggest it. I guess I should focus on more dental experience before getting into research, esp. becaue I think I will have a harder time trying to find research to get invovled with now as a post-grad

What? Where is this ranking system?

Research isn't only for applicants looking to do more research while in dental school. It shows you're a motivated, interested student who will go the extra mile to be involved in a valuable learning experience. The planning, diligence, critical thinking, etc. learned from being involved in scientific research are irreplaceable.

If you get the chance to do research, take it. Work hard and it'll pay off. After all, there is a spot for it on the application. Why would you purposefully do nothing to take advantage of it?

If i did research for a company but it doesnt have to do with science..should i put that down?? i researched information for borderline personality disorder....so im not sure if this is worth puttin down....any suggestions?

hehe...I actually did the same thing too... a little research for a company. Plus, I'm a psychology major, and I plan on doing research in that field. wondering if that counts. 😕

Research was a HUGE factor for me. It's not like it was the difference between getting accepted and not getting accepted. But it certianly helped.

I did 2.5 years in bone growth for dental/cancer research and got published on a paper.

So it just depends on how much you did/what kind you did/etc.

Though you can still get in without it. I know a ton of people who have.
