Is it possible during pathology residency to carry out a small amount of independent research during the various rotations? Or is time way to limited?

Of course it's possible, many people do it. How involved are you talking about? During many rotations your time will probably be limited during normal working hours because of demands on your time, but you can always stay late or come in early.
