Is anyone actively involved in research at their school throughout the academic year? It seems like a lot of osteopathic schools don't emphasize research. I am going to be a MS1 this fall and would like to be continually involved in research. I know that time is a limiting factor in med school, but I do know of some successful med students who were able to manage their time efficiently in order to squeeze in some research time throughout their week. For the people currently involved in research, how do you balance your time? Are you doing research at your school or at other institutions?

The vast majority of people I know that did significant meaningful publishable research were dedicated dual degree students (either MS or Ph.D). That way they had dedicated research time, money, brainpower, etc. Unless you're the next Enrico Fermi, you'll have a difficult time doing meaningful research and performing to the best of your ability in your pre-clinical courses.

I do know someone that does research at our school during the academic year. However, he is one smart cookie. He is in the top 10% of his class and still has time to study for boards and do research. I guess it depends on your abilities of mastering material and time managment.

Medical students do not have time to get a significant amout of research done during the school year, however it is possible to do a little if you are dedicated. I sent you a PM

After four years of undergraduate research, I've come to hate lab and would slit my wrists if I had to do research again despite getting a pub. F trypsinizing another fuqing cell culture for passage. Nonetheless, I have family members that did research during the summer at their home institutions or other schools. Good luck. Where are you headed?
