I know that research is important for med school and beyond, but just how important is it? Does it make a significant difference? And how do people go about getting research? How Important are publications?

If you are planning on pursuing MD.PhD then research is very important. While research for MD looks good and shows that you have a curiosity for learning, it is not a requirement, per se. It is important for research heavy schools, though, so you'll want to look at each school and understand what is important to each one. Pubications are a big plus, but also hard to achieve. If you plan on getting involved in research, only do so if you have a true interest in it...not just to gain acceptance to med school. A long term comittment with research is favored over someone who obviously crammed it into one summer or semester just so they could include it in their application.
Many universities(practically all) offer some kind of research positions for their undergrads, but it's not always very hands on. There are also summer programs that can be applied for throughout the country depending on GPA and interest.

Like MagicCookie said, research isn't a requirement if you aren't interested in MD/phD. It's a favorable EC. There are some great summer programs you can look into, some at specific medical schools (I did one through Cornell). You can also look for research at your university or labs near your school for a job. At my school students e-mailed teachers and showed interest in joining their lab. For outside of school, you apply for research assistant positions like any other job.

Also, there are Ph.D programs in biomedical sciences. You will be doing purely research for these programs.

Is there any benefit to research towards getting a residency or fellowship?

If you are interested in Orthopedic Surgery, doing research related to that will help you get a residency.

Don't worry too much, especially this early on, about finding research oppurtunities. The best way I have found to get them is to simply build networks with profs. This is easier if you can get into a smaller honors or "major only" course. Even if you are in a huge lecture, visting regularly during office hours and mentioning your interest in research can go a long way (As well as just being a good idea anyways). Almost all of the chemistry, biology, and psychology faculty are either involved in research or know someone well enough to put in a good word for you.

Hope this helps, and calms the nerves a little🙂
