Does anyone have a list of which residencies have stand-alone children's hospitals?
Thanks!

I am unsure if all these hospitals have residencies, but they are all freestanding.

List of freestanding children's hospitals can be found here:

HRSA List - link at bottom

The CHGME Payment Program provides funds to freestanding children’s hospitals to support the training of pediatric and other residents in graduate medical education (GME) programs. This program compensates for the disparity in the level of Federal funding for teaching hospitals for pediatrics versus other types of hospitals.

To be eligible for funding, by statute (Public Law 106-310), a children’s hospital must meet all of the following criteria:

Participates in an approved graduate medical education (GME) program

Has a Medicare Provider Agreement

Is excluded from the Medicare inpatient prospective payment system (PPS) under section 1886(d)(1)(B)(iii) of the Social Security Act, and its accompanying regulations

Is a “freestanding” hospital

A hospital remains eligible for payments as long as it trains residents as a “freestanding” children’s hospital during the fiscal year for which CHGME Payment Program payments are made.

Hospitals Potentially Eligible to Participate in the CHGME Payment Program

That looks like a pretty complete list but not entirely. My program is in TN and the two TN places listed don't have residency programs. The two programs in TN with residency programs (not listed) are LeBonheur in Memphis and Vanderbilt Childrens in Nashville. This may also hold true for others that are or are not on the list. I don't have a solution other than you may need to do some more specific investigating.

LeBonheur is one awesome name.

Also, LaRabida Children's Hospital is associated with University of Chicago (Comer Children's Hospital, which is new and almost free standing- it's connected to the main hospital by a bridge, which is nice in chicago in the winter). LaRa is for kids with chronic dz, and UChicago's second year peds residents do (i believe) two months there.

I am not really clear about the increased strengths of programs at stand alone childrens' hospitals. It looks like there are some solid programs at places without one, but some people seem to consider it pretty important. Any thoughts?

We are at a "children's hospital within a hospital", and think there are advantages and disadvantages, and you really should not choose a program solely based on whether it is stand-alone, and please do not rule out a program because it is not. Our program is very well respected academically, and has launched some of the top names in pediatrics. We benefit by having access to adult services for the kids with adult diseases, and we even admit adults with children's diseases (CF, Onc) to our floors, which broadens our experiences greatly. We have dedicated peds rads, anesthesia, etc, but they have backup if things get very busy. We also have a well-integrated med/peds program, and we don't have to go to a separate hospital for well-baby/delivery and NICU experiences (though we do have a community hospital we rotate through as well!). We also benefit from the financial stability of the larger hospital-some of our divisions are allowed to run deficits because we have other departments that can make up the slack-socialist, I know, but in our current reimbursement environment that does not value children, this provides a level of comfort. There have been talks about whether we should become freestanding, but even now I think the talk is more about having an independent "tower" rather than a separate building, although I think either would be OK. As long as the culture and academics of the program didn't change!

The important thing about a program is whether it provides the academic and clinical experience necessary to prepare you for whatever practice you want to do, and that it be a good fit for your personality.

University of Louisville's Peds dpartment is in a free standing children's hospital... Kosair Children's. Of course the residents also train at 2 other local hospitals (University Hospital, and Norton Hospital Downtown).
