Residencies begin in July, still possible to get a spot?

Is there an easy and efficient way of finding out if there are no-shows/drop-outs so that I could potentially "get" that open spot? Is there a list?

How can I go about doing this?

Feel free to PM me with details, or post here.

Thanks in advance.

You might be better off waiting until after July 1st and seeing how many available spots open up. I am sure all spots are filled with residents potentially starting in July. Just my opinion.

Isn't it a bit late to grab a slot? I always thought the Scramble pretty much filled up the last free positions and that happened in March.

In July, positions open up because for some unexpected reason (academic, work visa, etc), the person selected for the position can't take it.

There's a few websites which post the positions once they pop up. But there's no centralized system. Findaresident.com is run by the AAMC, and is legit. However they might be the last to have the open posting because the program might have to pay for it. Other websites like http://www.apds.org/residency_positions_open.htm might have the open postings up sooner, but are specialty specific.

Your best resource is always going to be folks you know who are going to different programs in your desired field. As soon as they hear that someone is quitting due to some unforseen reason, make sure they let you know. If you know people at 10 programs, and they each know people at another 10 programs, that's a decent network. Other than that, your next best bet is to simply keep in contact with all of the programs in your desired field (by email, phone calls).
In general, PDs don't like to publish that they have an open slot because this can sometimes be perceived as a negative. So it's very much a through the grapevine process. I'm not sure I'd shell out money to any of the online sources that claim to assist with these opportunities without getting firsthand experience from one -- the folks I've known who got spots off cycle didn't go this route.

But I kind of agree with jdh, that your highest yield is going to be to do some research over the next year and simply reapply through ERAS in September. You won't have meaningful research completed by interviews, but at least you will have another positive line on your resume as to what you are doing this year, and by networking/shadowing in your desired field at the same time, you may be able to get a few better LORs or even some direct phone call help. And by the end of the year your research can lead to a publication/poster/presentation during residency that will be useful for fellowship. Also many residencies let you have time off to go and do presentations of papers at major national meetings, so a good paper might even buy you a "vacation" day.

I hope you're not one of the NOVA students who relinquished their spot because of the rapture.
