HI! I am looking to apply for residency in Washington DC next fall. Does anyone have any input on the ObGyn programs at Georgetown, George Washington or Washington Hospital Center? I am just wondering what kind of environment each of these residency programs offer.

Also, I am interested in any information on residency programs in Baltimore or around the DC area. Any and all information is appreciated!! Thank you very much!

Hi there,

I can give pseudo-insight on 2/3 programs. First, I specifically did not apply to Georgetown b/c they are Catholic/Jesuit and therefore the chances to learn elective abortions are slim-none (I am sure you can find an external clinic and set up a rotation there, but I want a program that had that as a part of their training that I did not need to seek out). Also heard they don't prescribe birth control b/c of the religious affiliation, which I have a huge problem with. But that might not be 100% true (since I never made it there to ask!), but I am sure people who interviewed here can give more info on that.

I did interview at GW and did not like it at all. Their delivery numbers are crazy high and at a hospital far from the main site (INOVA fairfax) which seemed a little too high for me. Seemed at this place it's more about cheap labor than education. And a high number of FMGs, make of that what you will. Also didn't get a very cohesive vibe from the residents. I could see some people loving it here, but not me. Good luck!

Consider the Baltimore programs too - I loved Hopkins, not so much U of MD, but some people did. They aren't too far from DC!

I am definitely interested in hearing anything anyone has to say about programs in Baltimore or anywhere near the Washington Metropolitan area. Thanks for the feedback!

hey,

just wanted to dispel this awful rumor about Georgetown not prescribing birth control because it's a jesuit institution. as a med student at GUSOM who's going into OB/GYN, i can tell you that it's totally FALSE. tell everyone! doctors and residents prescribe birth control to patients for contraceptive purposes--no need to pretend it's for dysmenorrhea. we counsel patients on safe sex, condom use--everything you should be doing as a responsible OB/GYN. the only thing is, the patient won't be able to fill the OCP prescription at the georgetown hospital pharmacy.

as for learning how to perform TABS, you can do an elective. and honestly--you will be doing D&Cs for missed ABs and that's the same procedure. you'll also get plenty of tubals at Virginia Hospital Center, which has no religious affiliation.

all in all, i loved my OB/GYN experience and training at Georgetown. i'm not catholic or christian and i never felt the jesuit tradition limited my education.

let me know if you have anymore questions!

There is a information posted previously about residencies in DC and Baltimore. It helped me during applications and interviews.
Good luck
