Hi there,

I had a doubt about the program reviewing my application. I have applied on 1st Sept'09 with all my credentials and the required 3 LORs, except the 4th LOR (which has been assigned to all the programs as an adjunct LOR) got uploaded on ERAS on the 18th of September. So does that mean my application has not been reviewed by the selection committee yet thinking that the application is incomplete??? I am getting upset by this thought if that could be the case. I have not got any interviews yet( todays date : 18th sept'09)

Thanx 🙂

I suspect that most programs are just getting started with their review process, so I wouldn't panic yet if you haven't heard anything. If you have some "safety programs", you might here from them earlier than the others. For most programs, 3 letters are all that are needed, so I don't think that the lack of the 4th LOR is a deal-breaker. If you don't hear from any programs within the next 2 weeks, you may want to make a judicious telephone call to inquire about your status and their process.

The computer downloads applications automatically, so if your application just got downloaded by a program and it was submitted Sept 1st then those programs must just be starting to review applications. I submitted my application on the evening of September 3rd and have only submitted 2 LORs and do not have my photo downloaded yet and still had my application downloaded by all programs w/in a few days of submitting and offerred 10 interviews thus far. I certainly don't think 1 LOR outstanding would prevent you from getting interviews. I have applied mainly in the midwest so I think it is program dependent (and possibly region dependent). I wouldn't worry yet. If you still haven't heard from anybody in October (and you applied to some safety schools; some competitive programs wait later to offer interviews, some wait for Dean's letter), then I would check with programs. If your application hasn't been downloaded yet, then the program probably hasn't started downloading apps yet (since you applied on the 1st day). Good luck!

Any ideas about how quickly you should respond to an interview offer. I got offered one interview last Friday... I am trying to see if I get more interviews from the other schools in that same area so that maybe I could schedule all of them around the same time... but I do not really know when I would hear back from the other schools!!! Any advice would be appreciated.

I think it's always best to respond ASAP. You can just schedule it now, and either leave a few days around then for other programs, or you could reschedule it later. I feel like the only thing waiting does is make the program feel like you don't give a **** about interviewing there.

Thank you for your response.... another question!! I have been getting really mixed responses for this... is it recommended to interview early or try to do the interviews mostly in Dec and Jan.... does it matter?

The PDs, etc on SDN pretty much universally say that it doesn't matter, and mean it. Schedule them whenever is most convenient for you.

I agree that you should reply to interview offers within a week of receiving them. Mainly, because you always reschedule or cancel them as long as you give them plenty of notice. You don't want to finally decide to reply and not be able to schedule an interview b/c all of the spots are taken or the remaining spots don't agree with your schedule. Good luck!

Generally, it doesn't matter when you interview since programs typically use some sort of rating to make it fair among applicants that interview early versus late. If you are a strong applicant, I would think that the "disadvantage" of interview early would be minimal at best. I'm applying this year too, but if you do searches, most of the people on here will agree.

I think that interviewing earlier is better- if you wait until January, you may hit bad weather and resulting travel issues at a time when you can't reschedule. As was mentioned earlier, programs use a rating system and narratives from the interviewers as part of their ranking discussions. And if you interview sooner rather than later, you have the opportunity to take a "second look" in the event that you feel like you need more information about a particular program.

I agree. One program asked specifically that I schedule an interview as early as possible as scheduling one later may have to be canceled and may not be able to be rescheduled if you are really late in the interview season and all of the other spots are taken.
