Residency Hours

HI! Can soemone please tell me which residencies have pretty decent hours?

What's your definition of decent?

None have 40 hours per week.

Most have between 60-80 hours per week. Some have >80 hours per week, but that's going to come to an end very soon.

i wouldn't say none have 40 hr weeks. my friends doing derm work about that. no call, weekends off. intern year will suck no matter what you do, but afterwards a residency in derm is cush. they make bank, too. i wonder why it's so competitive....?

rad-onc has great hours, too. radiology isn't too bad. path is also pretty good.

oh yeah, and neurosurgery has great hours. only about 120/wk. check it out!

I believe most people here would agree that PM & R is rather light,with the exception of your first year which I've heard is hectic in any specialty.

This is purely a guess but I'd say it's around...55-65 hours ? Sound accurate to you guys ? Of course,it'll be a little more or less depending on the reigon,setting,etc.

Career hours are not the proper way to decide on your career,of course,but we do not know that the OP was soley making his/her descision based on this.

The factors I consider ( and hope some of u do to) are:

-Nature of the work ( Level of appeal,interest and enjoyment )
-Time worked
-Money made
-Who I associate with
-New challenges,growth,etc.

no of course not. he/she didn't even have the sense to ask what careers would have great hours. instead focusing on residency hours, which will be important for what 3-10 years? and now even the most demanding programs will be limited to a measly 80 hours a week.
residency isn't supposed to be full of free time.
well, you only cheat yourself.

Derm residency can be busy if you choose to be. There will be a lot to study and learn. But nonetheless, you do those on your own time. I work about 55 hours a week. I guess that is a less comparing to other specialties. But some residents I know works longer hours.. about 60 or so.

Thank you to all of the people who answered this question without judgment or snide comments. Even if this WAS the only factor i used who says that YOUR way is the gospel?

Yes, everyone has their own combination of reasons to choose a specialty. More and more, people are making the "lifestyle" decision and choosing careers that will make their entire life happy, not just their work life. There are plenty of specialties out there for all of us, and if someone happens to love one that only demands 50 hours a week during residency I say lucky for them!

Y'all forgot one though: Emergency Medicine, while tough during some of the residency (you rotate through many other specialties, lots of ICU stuff), will allow you to work less than 40 hours a week when residency is done and still make nice money. You will be working nights and weekends, however, so you must be able to be okay with that. And the job is demanding, so I'd only recommend it for those who actually like the work, not just the hours.

You're entitled to your opinion, but I respectfully disagree.

Some people choose to make their family their #1 priority, and in those cases this issue would be a major factor in career choice. Even if it's only 3-6 years of insane hours, that's 3-6 years children asking "Where's daddy (or mommy)?"

I have a friend who chose FP purely based on the fact that he and his wife had a newborn...he considered himself a father and a husband first, a physician second. I'm not condemning those that put their career first...all I'm saying is that it's a personal preference.

how about residency hours?

fwiw- i believe #2 on his list is time worked. i would hazard that he meant hours are not the only consideration, which i am sure most would agree with.
