Hey everyone. I know that this is hard to predict of course, but I was wondering what the liklihood of being able to do a residenct in the same place you went to med school?

In terms of what is important to me, I am not as concerned with applying to prestigious residency programs as I am with getting a quality residency, but in the same area I would attend medical school.

ANy thoughts?

I imagine it is doable, especially if you do well in your classes and be the kind of student/future doctor that your school would want to retain for residency! My mom went through a residency program in FP from her med school, and a good friend of mine is in his 3rd year of a surgey residency program at the med school he went to (actually it's the same med school for my mom and my friend!)

So there's proof it can be done 🙂 But it may depend on the school as to whether they like to keep their students or not.

Hi there,
Most medical students are interested in getting away from the departments where they attended medical school. Unless you really did something that disturbed your program director while you were rotating through a particular department, your chances of doing a residency at your school are probably pretty good. When you get into medical school, you need to make sure that you join a specialty interest group early and participate in their activities so that your department faculty get to know you early.

njbmd 🙂
