hi, i'm a med student from indonesia and planning to get residency in philippines. do i need to do housemanship like in sgp or mal? if i need to, how long will it be?
i'm interested in cardio but so far, i can't find uni that offer residency in cardio. do i have to do residency in internal medicine before applying for cardio in philippines? or is there a uni that offer resident in cardio?
thanks for any information...

The Philippines pattens it's medical training after the US, not Britain. Singapore and Malaysia are somewhat patterned after the British system. Read up on the US system.

Cardio is a subspecialty, which follows completion of a three-year residency in Intenal Medicine.

To get into a PI residency program you need to show completion of medical school, internship year, and you need to have a PI license, which normally follows sitting PI medical licensure exam.

Getting a PI license is the tricky part. Only PI citizens can sit the PI medical licensure exam.

You can get a license if Indonesia has reciprocity with the PI. Good luck on figuring that out.

The concept of reciprocity in the Philippines is a black hole. I'm not saying it's impossible. I'm suggesting that you'll never find a foreigner who has done it. I'm sure many people may vaguely suggest that it can be done. But they will be unable to provide you any details.

Indonesia and the PI are both ASEAN countries and there is a plan to extend reciprocity among ASEAN for medical licensure. But this is only a plan, and there doesn't seem to be any movement on it. I expect you will be a grandfather before it falls in place.

You have to finish Internal Medicine before getting into Cardiology which is a subspecialty fellowship in the Philippines. There are a number of Indonesian residents in the Philippines as they consider residency & fellowship as "training" and not practicing. You cannot practice or get a full license in the Philippines unless you are a Filipino citizen.

i suggest it would be best if you ask the program director you want to apply for regarding the technical stuff. 😉
