residency online database

I doubt very much these numbers are accurate, at least for Internal Medicine. I suspect these statistics are based on what the program directors are reporting on their individual program's website, and program directors place a high value on making their program seem more humane than what may be true.

The numbers seem underinflated, to me, and I have done rotations at 2 seperate universities, one private hospital, and now, my residency at a third, different, university hospital. Keep in mind, also, that these statistics you've linked to do not reflect any "changes" that may have occured since the new rules have been in place. 4 days is hardly enough time to collect data.

Anyway, out of the 4 programs I've personally witnessed as a 4th year medical student (and now as an intern), none achieved an "average maximum consecutive hours on duty of 28.6," with most going right for 30, which is the new allowable maximum.

The other day, I arrived at 630am, started call at 7am and took call until the next 7am, and left at 1230pm the next day. Still within the rules, but right at 30 hours in a row.

With regards to the 80 hours a week rule, however, let me say this.

On the whole, even as an inefficient "newbie," I have been averaging 71 hours a week, over the past 2 weeks (we start earlier than most).
