How does one go about researching residency programs?

What resources does one use and how are programs "rated" (i.e., by whom and using what criteria)?

I am particularly interested in IM, EM, FP, neuro, and peds.

Just trying to make sense of the process. Thanks!

Freida has a good site that lists all programs. You can also go to my website http://www.scutwork.com to check out links to different programs. Some of them even have reviews written by residents working there. That should give you a good idea about how things are. You can email the residents directly if an email is listed too. Good luck!

Adrian -- Thanks! I had given up on receiving a response. I found your site a couple weeks ago and it is very interesting -- as more and more people make use of it and enter info, it will really blossom.

Thanks for the heads up on Freida, too.

It's interesting that there are no comparitive listings of programs (even if informal). I assume that information on the quality of training, etc., is offered by faculty members and deans at med schools since there does not appear to be a gold standard reference for programs.

You are totally right. There seems to be no comparative listings out there at all. I think even if there were, it would be hard to understand the significance of them, simply because everyone have different criteria when selecting a program. I think that, at this point, trying to get as much factual feedbacks from residents would be the way to go. Program directors or deans tend to be a little biased and tend to promote their own programs. Those who are ojective may not be up-to-date with what is happening at the teaching level. They tend to be more aware about which programs have more research fundings, but aren't always aware of the politics going on behind those golden curtains. I think the best would be to find someone working in the program you wish to apply, or simply do a rotation there.
