Residency starting date

So, I got a huge packet full of papers to fill out and return to my program yesterday. 😉 😎

However, one thing caught my eye: the starting date, June 18. June 18th??!! 😱 That must be early because I thought programs start July 1 (not so?). They also made it clear that, (1) the 2-week orientation is mandatory, (2) they will not pay for relocation (3) I'm not considered an employee until July 1 and hence, I don't have any benefits (including health) and won't get paid for the orientation period. 😱 I thought programs pay during orientation (am I wrong?!)

So, what kind of correspondences have people been getting from their programs (if any) and when is their starting date?

Our start date at my program is June 11th. We have one week of orientation and then actually begin rotations on Tuesday the 19th. I don't recall seeing anything about getting paid or not for orientation and I have not specifically asked.

We received welcome emails from our chiefs, the program coordinator and from the program in general. We were already asked about vacations and where we want our continuity clinic in the emails from the chiefs. We also got an email from the coordinator about when we start and all of the paperwork we have to fill out prior to starting. Most of this was available electronically so we didn't get a huge packet by mail which was nice.

I start orientation on June 15th and then officially start rotations on June 24th. I have friends (in other specialties) that start on the 10th!!

My start dates are the same! However, I have only received a resident agreement so far, everything else (including my contract) will be mailed in a week or two. I want to see everything so I know what's going on and can start figuring stuff out. I'm excited and terrified at the same time lol.

Not an OB/gyn resident, but we had a similar set up - first "official" day was June 15th. I don't think we were paid for orientation, either.

Most residency programs do not pay for relocation.

Sucks. 🙁 It gets a lot better when you look for your first job as an attending; you usually get paid for relocation, as well as a sign-on bonus.

Got the master schedule today for rotations. So happy about where I'm starting! Starting to feel very real!

For me, no rotations schedule just yet 😉 but I'm sure it's in the works 'cause they've sent a ton of other stuff ranging from training license and ACOG applications to BLS/ACLS training dates. They've also requested info ranging from NPI # (which I received a few days ago) to lab coat size. Tons of paperwork to fill out and sign and that's getting tiring very quickly

I can't wait to start as well but I'm enjoying and gonna keep enjoying this interim period. 😀

It sure sucks. I did a dual application in OB and family. Went to look back at my interview notes and realized that many more family programs paid for relocation and orientation compared to OB. Don't know why. One program was paying up to $3000 in relocation costs! One had a starting salary of almost $51K. 😱

My program is doing none of these things but I'm still glad I matched there though. I hope in the end I come out well-trained and with great, fond memories because that will be priceless to me compared to all these other material stuff. 😀

Man I haven't gotten anything but a resident agreement. No contract, no schedule, nothing else. They said everything else should be coming in the next week or so...

There is so much paperwork! We got ours a few weeks ago and I spent a couple days getting it all done because I didn't want to forget about it since it is due 4/15. Our chiefs just emailed with our call schedules for the first block. Reality has definitely set in. I don't have any night call the first block, silver lining!

And we aren't required to do ACLS training and get our BLS/NRP training during orientation.
