Do you have to have an undergraduate degree in order to get residency? I got into dental school without an undergraduate degree but I am wondering if this is a big issue for getting residency.

thanks

I don't believe an undergraduate degree is required for 99% of Post-Doctoral dental residencies EXCEPT for several OMFS MD programs across the country.

Agreed. It really should NOT be a problem. The prereqs (among other things) for programs is that you pass Part I and Part II, and have a DDS/DMD degree. You can do all of that without a college degree, so it's a non-issue except for at some specific programs (none of which I know of).

Hey Andy,

How is third year going so far?

Bryan:

3rd year is not treating me too bad.

Positives:
1) you can be as relaxed as you wanted to be or as busy as you wanted to be. We schedule our own patients.
2) 35% didactics and 65% clinical curriculum
3) treating and interacting with patients are great! I received my first X-mas gift from one of my patient last week ($40 coupon to Burdines/Macys), that was a pleasant surprise!
4) only 6 final exams this semester in comparison to the first two years where there were on average 20 final exams/semester
5) more time just sitting around watching TV and/or do other things because there are nothing to study

Negatives:
1) semester clinical requirements are not done, I'm short in restoratives, S/RP, dentures, and Endo. This is not due to lack of patients, but lack of time scheduling patients and/or patients cancelling all the time. Some patient can only come in on certain times and once a week! Many of my classmates are in similar situation.
2) majority of the course grades are depending on production (completing semester clinical requirements) and not by studying like the 1st and 2nd year where most courses are didactics.

For most part, I'm enjoying my 3rd year. I can't believe how fast time flies. My 1st semester 3rd year is coming to an end next week and then it's X-mas/Winter vacation. Speaking of my winter vacation, I'll be off to my 2nd official OMFS externship with University of Minnesota for 3 weeks. I'm pump, but not too excited about the weather.

Should I start another OMFS Externship thread (not)?

Hi Yah,

Curious if you guys have to take emergencies when you don't have a patient scheduled. We usually get stuck with emergencies that end up costing us three hours of our time and we get ZERO credit for it.

It sucks when your schedule isn't full. I'm low on restorative to. For the next two weeks my schedule is literally only half as full as it could be (although prior to that I can't complain).

How do you find the interaction between the students and staff/preceptors in the clinic. Interacting with patients is great, but lately school has been reminding me of when I was a young girl going to Catholic school......I mean Mother Superior is always right, the student is always wrong (even when you are right). It sucks sometimes.

Nope, we only deal with emergencies (business hours) during our Emergency Rotations. I personally have not had any emergency calls from my own patients. I have about 12 patients under my care currently.

At Nova Dental, our faculty are great and very attentive. Thus far, I have no problems on the clinic floor with faculty members. I've been successfully getting procedures signed off since I've started clinic that have met the faculty's and clinic's standards.

hey yah-e i had a few questions about nova, and didnt want to start a new thread:

1- do u go to school every summer? if u do, how long of a summer vacation do u have?
2- i've heard stories of ppl having trouble finding patients, thus not being able to graduate on time. is it true?
3- whats the scheduled like the first two years? are you in school constantly from 8-5 everyday?
4- do u have to wear scrubs during ur first two years?
5- even though they're a private school, do they prepare u for the florida licensure exam? i definately want to stay and practice in FL.

thanks for ur help, sorry for all the questions, i'm probably going to attend nova. thanks

omar

Yeah Yah-E, I think you should give us updates on your upcoming externship in Minnesota -- your last one from LSU (?) was helpful. 👍

I'm a second year and I'm doing one this summer in San Antonio...really looking forward to it!
