I have 2 questions. Excuse me for sounding like an idiot, but this is the best place to ask...does anyone know how it will work for licensing in your state if you go to a school outside of your state? Also, what exactly happens after the fourth year?...Is it called a residency or an internship? How does it work with choosing where you spend that year?

do all schools have residency programs?

From my understanding, after you pass the national boards, you have to pass the boards for your region of the country. They have one for North East, one for South, one for Midwest, one for West etc. After that, many times states have their own exam you must pass to be certified to practice there.

They are residency programs you enter after fourth year and you apply for them just like you did to get into dental school. Not every school has every type of residency and sometimes hospitals have residency programs without having a dental school there. Often they are affiliated with a dental school or medical school though. I suppose if I took say the North East Regional Boards, I would apply for residencies that accept that exam score. I'm new to this so you may seek verification. Good luck.

You often apply through match...

Actually, the best place to ask this question is either in the dental forum or the dental residency forum. Most predents do not know altogether that much about it yet. Search the forums over there, there are links to different programs, lists of programs, pretty much all of the info you will need.

Thanks for your reply...How does it work with residency if you want to be a general dentist? Do all states require a residency for general? How does placement work?

NY requires a 1 year residency for general dentists. Pretty sure that it is the only state with this requirement. Residency for GP = GPR or AEGD

Agreed. As far as I know NY is the only state requiring a GPR or AEGD for General Practice.
