I read recently that there are 5 programs that have residents as the primary doc on the flight service. Another poster mentioned that Mayo was one. I know St. Vincent (Toledo) is another. Anyone know the other 3 (or if there are more than 5?)? Thanks!!! 😀

Indiana, Grand Rapids, and Akron General (altough to be fair I should note that Akron's residents fly on MetroHealth's birds. They are not primary staff on Akron's birds...)

Cinci, UMich, and UMass are three places where I interviewed that have residents on all flights. I'd be careful though... some places will let you do a month where you're part of the team but (IMHO) if that's your interest, you're better off at a place where residents are on every flight all of the time - that way the crew knows your role and you're not just someone that they're trying to "fit in".

Thanks for the info everyone! That's a really good point, aliraja.

Of the programs mentioned, which ones have residents on every flight all the time?

UMass has a resident on every flight.

We are also heavily involved with EMS services, including a fellowship in EMS/disaster medicine...

Pitt is one that hasn't been mentioned yet....and I think UChicago might be yet another.

St. Vincent has a resident on every flight (at least on the first-out helicopter)

How about Pitt? I thought the STAT Medevac based at Presby always had a resident. Anybody know?

And Pitt also has the badass truck. One of their residents is always in an EMS "Emergency Physician" response SUV that goes out to calls. That's such a great recruiting tool... they take you out to lunch in it on interview day and if there's a call you respond. If you're at all interested in EMS I think you've got to consider Pitt very very seriously.

Erlanger Medical Center in Chattanooga, TN.

Cincinnati runs two helicopters, both of which always have a resident on board (MD & RN crew). You fly from years 2-4. As an R2 you fly out of the ED in addition to regular helicopter(H) shifts; in years 3 & 4 you fly only when scheduled for H shifts (~2/month).

I disagree. Here at Mayo you do an EMS month during your PGY-1. That month is designed (in part) to give you the necessary flights to be "checked-off" as a crew member (~10). Once you are "cleared" you fly as crew. On those flights, it is only you and a flight nurse (pilot too!) There is no problem "fitting in" as there are only two of you and more than enough work to go around. When a resident is not on a flight, there are two flight nurses or a flight nurse and a flight medic. With only 6 residents per training year, we simply could not cover every flight, but the experience you are concerned about (the "outsider" trying to fit in) doesn't occur either.

For the residents, after your EMS (flight) month, you are assigned 1-2 twelve hour flight shifts every month you are in the ED. This goes throughout your residency. For those with a lot of interest in flight, additional flights can be worked.

Erlanger's LIFE FORCE does NOT have residents as primary providers on any flight. It is a flight paramedic/flight nurse combination on both helicopters. Residents that tag along are strictly observers only.

Erlanger doesnt even have an EM residency. Only EM program in TN is Vandy.

clarification: Unless something has changed in the last couple of years, there is no STAT Medevac helicopter based at Presby in Pittsburgh. Their helicopters are based away from Oakland to cut response times in half. (don't have to fly out and back to pick up patients) Incidently, Stat Medevac is the largest civilian air ambulance service in the world.
