Just wondering if anyone here has been watching Resident Life on TLC, instead of studying.

BTW it comes on at 8 central time Monday nights.

I have, it's my little shot of TV for the week. I like the squirrel thing on it the best.

I've seen it once and thought it was great. Is it always at Vandy?

btw, 9:00 for us eastern time zone peeps.

yeah I get a nice 2 hour dose of TV. Trauma and Resident Life on TLC Mondays. I am kinda hooked on the theme song too.

Yeah, thinks its always at V-bilt. Good show, though.. gets a part of residency most of hte public doesn't see (although T:LITER helps too). Much better than ER. Hope they go to different places, not just stay in one hospital the whole season! I want to be on their show!

You can check out it on the TLC website, but I pretty sure that it will all be at Vandy and that it was filmed last winter/spring. I don't know about another seaseon taping. I have heard that the HIPPA laws may be a problem.

As long as the patient understands what is going on and will sign a waiver, the HIPAA thing is peachy keen.

How will they get around the laws if the patient is unconsciouss? In fact, whether there are any laws or not, the film crew certainly does't need to be there, and I have always wondered how exactly they go about explaining the presence of the cameras to the patients and their families (especially in critical situations when there are much more important things to be worried about). I certainly wouldn't want my naked arse on tape if I had just been run over by a truck...

I am still hooked on the theme song. I just found out on the TLC website that is was sung by They Might Be Giants. Cool huh?

As for filming in an hospital, I think they film a lot of stuff and use what they get consent on. Myself, I would have no problem if I was filmed in an ER. I know it is for educational purposes and I understand how powerful of a medium television is.
I think of the choice of allowing filming is the same personal choice as any consent. Just like you have the right to refuse treatment if you so choose. As for an unconscious patient I am sure they also need consent from them when they wake or from their family. I think most of these shows are filmed 6 months or a year in the past, so they have plenty of time to get it. Plus, I think they get compensated for being in a show anyway.

If the patient survives, I'm sure they can sign a waiver...

Yeah, I like that song. Downloaded it on Kazaa (sh don't tell anyone). Its so fitting for residency. I am going to have it say the chorus when I load up my computer at our EM call room.

I watched the first episode and stopped after that one. What I object to is that it shows only surgical residents with one OB/GYN intern. I guess this is because the general public wants excitement and finds surgery exciting.

I wish the program was more well rounded. This would mean showing internal medicine and/or family practice residents doing the day-to-day work to keep people alive.

But I guess the general public wouldn't be excited by watching me correct someone's potassium at 2am, huh? 😉
