Hi,

I recently started my residency in ophthalmology (I am a PGY-2) and realized that ophthalmology is not for me. Orthopedic surgery was very, very high on my list during medical school as a specialty but I was felt I would enjoy microscopic surgery more. Boy, what little I knew as a medical student before select fields. I should have applied for ortho.

Now, I am seriously pondering changing fields. I wanted to get the opinion from this forum whether it is too late for me? If not, any advice on what first steps I should take? I did do a general surgery internship.....

I'm sorry that I can't help you with your questions, but I would love to get your opinion on a few things...
I'm a 3rd year med student who is trying to decide between Optho, Ortho, and ENT. What should I be looking at to get a good idea of what life would be like as a resident and in practice. What are the elements of Optho and Ortho that you liked / didn't like. What can I do to help me with this decision? Sorry to ask so many questions, just want to get as much info on the front end, so I can make the best choice. Thanks.

since you did a surgery prelim you should look for open pgy-2 spots. i know that one of the residents that finished last year from my school got a spot after a guy left our program. its not too late....go talk to the chairman at your hospital and get some solid advice.
