Nice guys! For a newbie who joined SDN *ONLY* for the fired residents bItChInG sessions, I have to admit this is pretty funny.

But all play and no work makes snow a dull boy. So seriously - what can you do when the PD is hell bent on destroying your career? And to add insult to injury, doesnt even issue an LoR or an explanation letter?

Step 1) Recognize that 99% of the time the PD is not actually hellbent on destroying your career, but instead has one of the following problems:
-Has tried to work with resident but failed due to resident's failure to acknowledge their own deficiencies.
-Is very busy and has other things to do. Is happy to help resident but doesn't want to shoulder the entire burden when all the resident wants to do is argue with him/her.
Step 2) Analyze your own deficiencies and tabulate your successes. If you need help, ask the PD or other attendings to help you with that step.
Step 3) If you are still convinced there is a vendetta, ask another attending or go to the chairperson of the department.
Step 4) Gather evidence of the vendetta. By this point you should have actual evidence that you are being unfairly treated otherwise you should never have progressed this far.

Think about it this way: Why on earth would a PD take time out of their life to attempt to squash the career of one of their residents? Does it really make any sense? Unless there is some sort of personal vendetta (you killed the PDs dog, you got his daughter pregnant, your families used to fight over a patch of farmland 50 years ago) it is an illogical assumption. Vendettas are too time consuming.

Petty, vindictive people unfortunately do happen. PDs/attendings/senior residents can and do make life hell for an intern for no other reason than they simply don't like them, although actually getting them fired when the intern is otherwise doing well sounds pretty extreme.

OK, but that still doesn't make any sense. Senior people can be vindictive but they usually are NOT persistently vindictive against one individual for no tangible reason. That is what people on this forum would have you believe - they select a resident at random from the incoming class and decide to make his/her career their personal bitch. If they are constantly on the case of one individual it is because that reputation was deserved. Senior docs usually have very good reasons for not liking specific residents - namely that they are incompetent, fail to follow directions, fail to take constructive criticism, etc. Sometimes these reasons are misguided or do to misunderstanding, but this can be corrected if the resident acknowledges what problems do exist and what can be done about it.

Of course, there are vindictive individuals who appear to hate everyone. But that isn't what we are talking about.

thanks. for some reason I counted "tired" as only 1 syllable. I checked the following modification at http://www.haikuwithteeth.com/index.php (though the site doesn't know how to handle "cpap"):

There are lots of words you can alter the syllables in. "Everyone" can be 3 or 4. "Tired" can be one or two.
