Don't want to go into too much detail but it's possible I might have a restraining order against me. My ex gf owed me money and refused to pay up. I made a comment to a mutual friend and she over reacted about it and filed a protective order against me. Am I screwed now?

also before running to a lawyer it's easier and cheaper to just run a background check on yourself and see what comes up

A restraining order is a civil law. It's not criminal. So it would not come up on any background check that I know of. Now, if you want to work for the government (NIH etc.) it might come up and possibly for lisecening. You're not a criminal. Also, you can counter file and/or fight the restraining order once you're served.

You're fine. Medical schools won't find out etc. However, it may show up in the future so you def would want to fight it. A restraining order isn't an admission of guilt for a crime, it's just somebody that wants to be away from you. But it will look bad, like a bad credit score etc. You're not a criminal though. Stay away from that person.

Always smart to do this first. Should run you around $30.

Sooooo what was the comment that she overreacted to?

Unless it recently happened, you probably do not have a restraining order against you as you do have to appear in court for it to take effect. If for whatever case you do have a no contact order against you, whether or not it shows up on a background check varies from state to state. Florida, for example, shows all civil and criminal history on background checks.

I know in PA, you have to actually threaten the other person to have a PFA be upheld. You'd also know if you had one as you'd be served.

This suddenly makes more sense...

Dude, she's totally into you. A restraining order is practically asking you on a date.

(For those of you confused check out his other thread saying female professors are into him because they scoff at him)

Yeah... Some of the threads that he started are troubling to say the least.
