So I have a 3.98 right now, probably going to keep getting straight As until I apply to Med school. However one of the grad students in my lab keeps saying I should retake the one class I got an A- on (Existentialism lol) because a 4.0 'just looks really good' but I keep wondering if it's even worth it considering I'll most likely end up with a 3.99 and the ADCOMS will see on my transcript the only class I got less than an A on was a philosophy class. What do you guys think?

MD schools don't offer grade replacement. Retaking won't do anything. You got less than a 4.0 so now it is impossible to get it.

Glad to know, I'll tell him that so he'll get off my back. He's even told me to go talk to the professor to get a grade change lol no thank you.

This. Be extremely proud that you have a 3.98. I would LOVE to have graduated with even a 3.8, but I slacked off freshman year. Retaking the A- is ill advised IMO.

Your GPA is ridiculously high as it is and one A- won't be a problem. An adcom (for allopathic schools) would rather see you take on a new course and ace it than retake a course just to average your grade in a philosophy course (you even may end up with a lower grade if unlucky).

The main thing is you are extremely competitive and you should just take new classes. Leave the Existentialism class in the past.

Good luck

Funny, I had sort of an opposite experience - I have a 4.0 and my premed advisor suggested that I get an A- because a 4.0 would make me look like a premed robot

But yeah don't retake the class, there's absolutely zero point. No grade replacement, so the two grades will just average. The only time someone should consider retaking a class for an MD school is if it's a C or below in a premed requirement class.

I've always heard that one should only retake a D or below (or C- if it's a pre-req and the next class in the sequence requires a minimum of C).

Finally someone who isn't crying about getting less than an A and considering begging the prof for a higher grade. Reps OP.
