How do medical schools typically treat retaken courses (if specificity helps then nys schools like stony brook and buffalo)? My school replaces the new grade with the old grade for gpa purposes (both still appear on the transcript). Do medical schools do the same or sort of average the grades and how is it generally looked at? Like for example you got a C the first time then an A upon retake? Thank you.

They simply average the grades. So if you got a "C" and then an "A" I suppose that would be sort of like earning a "B."

DO programs (like NYCOM or Touro-NY) will replace the lower one with the higher. Does wonders for the GPAs.

DO programs replace the lower grades.

AMCAS, on the other hand, requires you to input all of your grades, and then will spit out an AMCAS GPA upon verification. Medical schools will not see the GPA on your college transcript. The only GPA they see is the AMCAS GPA.

AMCAS takes all grades into consideration, so essentially, the two grades will just be averaged for twice the weight.

Here's one thing I've wondered: even though most DO schools do grade replacement, do they completely ignore the bad grade that has been replaced? I mean, even if grade replacement fixes the GPA, those hideous grades will still be on the transcript, won't they?
