A few years ago (2014), I got a C in a major prereq. My school will allow me to retake it. I think I would be more comfortable retaking it because it is heavily covered on the MCAT and I feel I need the review before I start studying for the MCAT.

Is it a bad idea to retake a C grade?

Thanks so much in advance. 🙂

P.S. I promise I tried the search function before posting, but the posts I found were about retaking a prereq at a CC or were in reference to now-defunct DO grade replacement.

Depends on the amount of hours you have taken if you're talking about from a GPA repair perspective. As far as preparation for the MCAT. I self studied and obtained my 520 years after taking the courses.

If you are taking this course primarily to review for the MCAT that's a bad idea IMO.

I think it's perfectly reasonable to retake a 5-year-old class when you didn't master the material sufficiently to do well on the MCAT and don't feel you could grasp it adequately through self-study.

Thanks, Cat. 🙂 I feel uneasy about the material and like there are a lot of gaps in my knowledge after I missed class the whole month of October due to illness, causing the C. I missed those questions on the final too.

I've heard opposite advice from resources like Med School Insiders, but it's good to know that self-study is a valid approach.

The MCAT covers a lot of topics but doesn't require a lot of depth. Any course you take will be in greater depth than the MCAT requires. I agree that self-study is valid if you have the motivation for it. Especially if you have already taken the class in the past (even with a C).

Good to know. Volume over depth is one descriptor I've heard regarding the MCAT and also towards med school.
