Hey guys,

I go to UCLA and I got C in biochemistry last quarter and I also got C+ for MIMG 102. Now I have the choice to accept C+ or request C- and retake the class. What should I do? My gpa is not good and I really want to go either MD or DO school. Which looks more nicer? Accepting C+ and move on or request C- and retake the class again. Help me guys. I need to response to my professor this week on my decisions and I am really lost.

Thanks

Take the C+ and move on. A couple of C's aren't going to kill you, just be sure to do much better in future classes. You said your GPA is low, what is it?

Yeah, you're going to have to bring that up. But I'm sure you know that already. What's your plan? What're you finding difficult?

Ok so I am a transfer from community college to UCLA. I just finish second quarter in UCLA. Because I take upper division courses, it's so hard to get good grade given the fact that it's so hard. Actually I need to take LS 3 course before I take that class but I did not and get a C+ for virology. So what should I do? Should I take C+ and move on or take C- and get a better grade? I am really confused. I really want to go to MD or DO school and I heard that MD school is not so forgiving. I only have a couple of days to decide what I should do. Of course, if I accept C- my GPA would be even further lower but then if I get better grade next time, my gpa will be replaced but still I don't know what I should do because MD still takes into account of average and C- looks ugly in application. 🙁 I really plan to bump up my gpa to 3.5 by the time I graduate in next 5 quarters. Please provide me some perspectives guys 🙁

You can retake but make sure you get at least an A-/B+ on the retake, especially if you don't have that many science classes under your belt yet.

Accept the C+ and use that as motivation to improve in the following quarters.

I am still very confused and overwhelmed. My life seems so bleak. What should I do? These days I have thinking of this matter for like thousands times 🙁 I still cannot decide yet

Take the C and don't get any more C's. Yes, the coursework is challenging, but that's not really an excuse for not doing well. My advice: identify your weakness and work on them. Are you not retaining material? Do you get test anxiety and blank out? Are you taking too many units? Too many ECs and not being able to balance your course load?

Since I transfer to UCLA, I haven't been joining EC. Actually the reason why i get C+ is that I did not get what professor ask about experimental techniques and question and the co requisite class for that Virology is LS 3 and I did not take take that and go to that class. That's why I have difficulties but I really do study hard and I still don't get why I did so badly all the time.

If your ultimate goal is to increase your GPA then I wouldn't retake the course. Because MD schools don't participate in "grade forgiveness" when they calculate your GPA. For example, if you get a C + and later receive an A/B in the same course then they will count both grades separately (they don't take the average or accept the highest grade). It really won't increase your AMCAS (MD) GPA by much but it will increase your undergrad GPA. However, biochemistry is a pre req so if you feel like you didn't understand the material then maybe you should retake the course. This will show med school admissions that you improved in the course. Lastly, when interviews come along they will ask why you got a C but if you retake it and get an A then it will only make you a stronger applicant.
