Hi i was wondering if any of you have retaken any undergrad courses that you recieved C's in (not C-).

Because i keep hearing about people being able to retake their courses to recieve a better grade and improve their gpa. But when i asked my counselor about it~ she said that you can only retake courses that you recieve F,D's and C-'s in. She said that it was not possible to retake a courses i reciebed C's in. I go to UCR.

I dont undersstand~ please respond.

Sorry for the poor grammar

I think most public schools like UC's, don't let you retake the class for UC credit/gpa if C- or above. But when you apply to schools, they will take the higher of a retake class, and calculate their own application GPA. So basically you can re-take that class at any school that will transfer for pharm school.

You are "allowed" to retake any class you wish... but at my university, if you retake a class that you had a passing grade in, you are not able to apply financial aid towards that class and everything comes straight out of your pocket.

I'm not sure exactly what schools do this, but I have read that some will replace your lower division prereq courses with similar upper division courses if the grades are better.

Like above, i think you can retake the class.. it just won't be counted towards your gpa... for your school. But pharmcas will consider it and weigh it into the appropriate schools (some schools take higher grade/some don't). If you have the money then I think you should retake those C classes... if your gpa is suffering from those C's... just because your school doesn't consider it, doesn't mean that other pharm schools wont.

would there be anything wrong with if u got a C+ taking a class at ur univresity, but retook it at a COmmunit College/ State college to raise ur grade for pharmcas?

Hey, I'm a UC Davis student and the policy applies here too, but I still have retaken a Chemistry class even though I recieved a C the first time. When I retook it I earned an A-. What happens is since you didn't earn a C- or below, the GRADE on your official transcript will appear, BUT NO units will be given, therefore it won't be factored into your UC grade. So the adcom can still see it and realized that you've taken it. NOTE: This is at UC Davis, and I'm not 100% it applies to other UCs.

Good Luck.

i think you can retake classes that you've received Cs in, but they will just average the grade out and it won't replace it

I would suggest not retaking the class(es) you got a C in, but rather take some other SUGGESTED ELECTIVE upper-level science class(es). For instance, I received a C in Organic II (required) but instead of retaking that class I enrolled in Genetics and Pharmacology (not required) and got A/B in those classes. I think this is a better approach, and it gives the impression of a more "well-rounded" education. This should help you on the PCAT also.

I agree. I received C's in (for you UC Davis folks) che 2a, che 2b, bio 1a, bio 1b. Those 4 qtr's literally killed my gpa. That was 3 yrs ago. Now that I graduated (BA in Econ), I am taking upper-div sci electives at SFSU. I have/will have taken by end of Fall biochem, anatomy, and genetics.

So far, I've gotten an A- in biochem. I PLAN to get around an A for anatomy and genetics this fall and I feel those A's will look better than any retake of gen. chem and bio.

I hope that all makes sense. If not....

Do not retake lower division courses with C's to impress adcom. Instead, take upper-div classes not required (but are in pharmacy school, i.e. biochem and immunology) and get A's there. That should show the adcom you NOW mean business and those few qtr's with C's were just a fluke.

This is advice I received from numerous adcom's. Easier said than done thought, but I'm almost there. 🙂

thanks for the advice, that does make better sense.

Butt...........still, if the C's in gen chem (like mine) are killing your GPA, shouldn't you take then to boost that gpa. Because, C's kill.....

Your GPA will boost if you take upper division classes and receive good grades as well. It just looks a lot better when you are doing well in harder classes like that instead of wasting your time on the same thing over and not learning anything new. Advance your education instead of staying stuck on a class just because you didn't do great.

To the OP, great advice! I could not agree with you more. 👍

when pharm schools calculate your gpa, do they calculate a gpa for their pre-reqs? i got my first C and i almost died. i hate my bio teacher! lol now im just scared to take o-chem because i heard that class is hard and i dont want anymore C's 🙁 just out of curiousity, was zoology a really difficult class? which did you think was harder, general biology or zoology. im taking zoology next sem. and physics too, im thinking about o-chem but i dont want to overwhelm myself with hard classes. are they even hard? i just dont want to go through the semester saying to myself that these classes were not that bad so i should have taken o-chem.
