retaking courses
Started by cubicw86
I retook Organic 1 and will be retaking gen chem 2 and stats over the summer and fall because I made C's in them. For the schools that take the highest grade earned, retaking those classes I made C's in does WONDERS for my GPA. It's definitely worth it to me.

im taking organic chemistry one and two during the summer
omg!!!
that's crazy. I really wish my school would offer more summer courses.
Do you guys really advise retaking C classes? Re-taking classes is time consuming and expensive. I didn't do so well in the early classes like chem and ochem I but did fine in higher level classes like biochem, genetics, microbio. Do you think I should retake chem and ochem I?
I took Organic Chem I three times in undergraduate. I got a D+ the first time, a D the second, and a C the third. I dont know what possessed me to take Organic II three times also, I failed it twice, then got a D the third time.
Fast forward about five years and I took Organic I and II over again. I got an A in Organic I and a B in Organic II. In this case maturity, study approach, teacher and size of class really made a difference to me.
So for the record:
Organic Chemistry I - Four Times
Organic Chemistry II - Four Times
😱 Holy crap hu?

me too. i did not do well in the general science and chem classses, but i did well in the higher level classes such biochem, genetics, physical chem....
i don't think you should retake the C class again. if you want to retake them, make sure that you get A or B in those classes. if not , your gpa and transcript will looks bad.

is there a limit on how many time that you can take a class. i think at the University of Houston, you can only retake the class twice.

Does retaking classes look bad on ur application? do pharmacy schools look at suck things??? let me know cause i m taking Bio I over again....
thanx all

I think retaking classes is 2-fold. On one hand, it's not great that you have to retake a class in the first place, because that likely means that you got a C or lower the first time (I honestly would not retake any course I made a B in). On the flip side, you are showing the adcoms that you can master the material provided you earn a high grade once you retake. Not to mention the fact that it does help your GPA, no matter what method they use to calculate it (averaging the 2 grades or taking the higher grade). Either way you GPA will improve. So the way I look at it, the benefits definitely outweigh the disadvantages.
Emergency dilemma!
I got rejected to the pharm schools i applied to for 2006. Over the year, I've retaken a few classes at a Cal State. I'm planning to apply again for 2007, but I JUST got accepted to Midwestern Biomedical Science Masters Program! Should i do this program for a year (post-bacc option) while applying? Will it help me at all with my overall GPA? But since it cost $$$, should i just continue to take classes at a Cal State? Do those classes help with my GPA?

for retaking classes, should we re-take them at our current 4-year University, or is it also OK to re-take at a state college or junior college near hometown? Thanks!
In high school - I took Calc I and get a "c" and MacroEco and got a "WF" (OUCH!!!!). After completing my tours in the Marine Corps. - I came home and started school again (5 years later). I received a "B" in Calc I, then took Calc II and got an "A". I also retook MacroEco and got an "A". My GPA went from a 2.37 before the Corps to a 3.75 (as of spring 06) afterwards.
I am applying for the first time this year. I say do everything and anything you can to increase your GPA - as long as it is does not interfere with you completing other pre-reqs... You should be working towards some form of a degree, not spinning your wheels.
Let us know how it all works out
