Retaking MCAT with on-going application

Hi everyone,

I am taking the test on Jun 17th, and I am close to completing the primary. If say, when I get the score back on July 20th and I'm still not satisfied with it, can I still complete the application and re-write at a later date? The reason is that my schedule won't permit me to write in July(won't have time to study during that month anyways), so the next date I would take it is probably in late August. Also I have a specific aim for certain Canadian schools as well to go for a 11+ verbal.

I plan to complete my app by the 20th no matter what and send an update to each school about my newer MCAT when I write it at a later date. Is this OK? I know on AMCAS I have to declare dates I plan to write the MCAT this cycle but I also do not want to lose the early advantage just for some strict cut off in the verbal section.

Submit your application as early as possible. It has to undergo a review process that takes a while. I took my MCAT last year on June 16 and submitted at the end of July/Early August and was at a huge disadvantage.

In addition, many of the secondaries (if not the primary) will ask if you plan to retake the MCAT. If so, check yes. But again, the earlier you submit your information, even if you havn't got your scores back the better.

Note: You can submit your primary application without MCAT scores, they will autmatically update when they come in. So apply to all of the schools you are for sure going to apply to and then add borderline schools after you get your MCAT scores back. This is something that I wish someone told me before I applied. It would have saved me a month of waiting for my application to get verified.

Thanks for the reply. By submitting early, do you mean the primary or the secondary? I actually already have a score from last year, which is fairly competitive(34R) but I am writing this summer to improve the verbal. If I indicate on my secondaries that I plan to take the MCAT, will they withold my application until the score arrived?

Based on what i've read, schools can see you're signed up for another MCAT (because AMCAS and AAMC are connected)... so if you report that you're writting it and then they see you are, it may raise suspicion against you.

I'd send a letter to all your schools explaining the situation and maybe they would still consider you. Though, saying you're re-writing to try and get into a Canadian school may be a big X against you.

Well this isn't exactly a unique scenario, althought it would be logical for them to assume that a Canadian would be applying to Canadian schools. So what do most people do if they write early and find that their score isn't good enough(doesn't have to be in the verbal section), do most opt to re-write and wait until they get the new score?

This is my first time applying to the US, so I'm a little unfamiliar with the steps, esepcially with regards to rolling admissions.
