hello, So im retaking ochm 1, because i got c the first time. but i just got my first exam back today and i got a D. I was wondering if i should drop it now and get "w" or should i keep it and hopefully get a B. If i get B, it'll just average out to C, so i'll be working hard for no reason lol. idk what to do..😕 PLEASE HELP!!!

Do you get to drop the lowest grade or anything like that?

I really don't know if I'd be retaking a C in the first place, tbh. Of the choices you've given, if I didn't understand the material (& stood a reasonable chance of changing that fact), I'd take it again & take a W if I didn't get an A/B. (After all, nobody knows whether you dropped it 3 weeks in or 14 weeks in after it's on your transcript.) If not, or if I were pressed for time, I'd take the W up front.

I have to ask the obvious question. Why are you doing so poorly on your second round of O Chem I? How are you going to improve? Do you just not understand the material & are you giving your best performance...? Have you taken O Chem II yet? If so, how did you do?

I'm sure you're aware already, but pharmacy expands on O Chem directly in biochem and indirectly in other ways. I'm concerned about your ability to thrive in harder courses.

Well i already took ochm 2 and biochm 1 and i got B in both. I am taking biochm2 and hoping to get an A. I don't think ochm is hard at all, but i just didn't study that much for the exam because i had pcat exam the same week. Also, my professor got heavy accent, so i can't really understand her, so basically, i have to learn from the book. 🙁

yea if got less than c (D or F)..since i got C, they will average out the two grades. for example, lets say i get B this time, it will average out to C+ 🙁

There's the problem.
The first thing I do when I get a bad grade on an exam is calculate what I need to make on the other tests/quizzes/homeworks to get the grade that I want. Then I ask myself if it's possible for me to accomplish that.

Are you taking Ochem at a university or a CC? Just asking because my Ochem professor put his notes online, but he goes in depth into the subject. Read your book at do ALL the problems in the book.

its funny, that's the first thing i did when i got my exam back i calculated what i need to get an A in the class lol I have to get 100% in other two exams and have to do good in ACS in order to get an A- in the class. I don't think its gonna be possible 🙁

Are you sure pharmacy is right for you? I'm not trying to be rude but I think you are either being lazy and don't really study, or just the subject matter does not stick in your head. Organic chemistry is very important for your success in pharmacy schools. It involves classes like medicinal chemistry, biochemistry...etc later on in pharmacy school.

Yea I know my statues says I'm a pre med but I'm changing to pharmacy and my sister is already a pharmacist.

How about a B? You made an A in OChem II, so a B in OChem I isn't bad.
Plus, you can always retake it if you want to.

Would it show just a W or a WF (drop with fail)?
If it's WF then aim for a B in the class.

think about this you still need orgo II so if you finish out orgo I with a B or C atleast you will be better prepared for orgo II.

I would consider getting a tutor. Does your school provide those types of services? They are usually free service provided by university, so you should take advantage of that. Also, look at your studying method. If you study by yourself and still not doing well, try studying in a group. If the professor offers any help, schedule a time with him or her to go in and discuss what you don't understand. Always try and seek help in school first. That's always the best way.

Don't drop it after one test, I think you can still get at least a B. So try and work hard!

I would talk with the professor first, she will probably have a better idea if you can survive her class or not.

Zealot's suggestion is good too. You should also check out MIT OCW. I am not sure if they have an organic chemistry course though. I have similar problem with my Pchem professor, I couldn't understand him at all. I ended up not going to the class for the whole quarter, and used the MIT OCW. Got a close A- for the course.

In addition, Harvard has video lectures, and UCSD has audio podcast. Consider getting a study guide, and like aznhomieboi1689 suggested, look for free tutoring.

You might also want to sit in the front row during the lecture. Sit next to those students that ask questions every few minutes, and ask politely if they can help you out.
