I just got my grade back for Organic 1 and I got a D+. I'm scheduled to take Organic 2 next semester because it is a spring only course at my school, but if I flunked so bad in Organic 1, I seriously doubt that I can get the B+/A that I need to get in Organic 2 for my GPA. Do you think I should just wait to retake Organic 1 over the summer, and then take Organic 2 the spring of my Junior year? If I did that I'd have to wait until fall of my Senior year to take Biochem.

Organic 1 is only offered in the fall at my school. Its a pain I know.

As someone who just finished organic 1 and has been reviewing my school's organic 2 syllabus I would recommend waiting to take organic 2 because many of the principles (stereochemistry, electron pushing...) are absolutely necessary to understand the reactions of organic 2. In your case, I would recommend re-mediating organic 1 over the summer at a 4 year university and then taking organic 2 either during the summer or when it is offered next by your school. Taking organic chemistry 2 without a solid foundation from Organic 1 would just set you up to fail.

Yes from talking to upperclassmen at my school I'm thinking about just retaking Organic 1 over the summer and taking Organic 2 in the spring of my junior year. I'm just worried because I hear that there is a lot of Biochem on the MCAT and the way things are right now I might have to take Biochem after taking the MCAT. Do you think a prep book is sufficient to study for the Biochem portions of the MCAT?

This was my situation:

I was going to take the MCAT last summer while taking biochem 1 over the summer. When i took practice MCATs, i noticed A TON of biochem, so I was very thankful I took biochem in a class setting. However, long story short, I didnt feel prepared to I pushed off the MCAT till jan.

I just finished taking biochem 2 this semester, and again, I noticed a significant portion of it on the practice MCATs I've taken. Additionally, my friends who took it noticed a lot of biochem 2 on the real MCAT.

That being said:

I recommend taking at least biochem 1 no matter what. You could pull off self-teaching biochem 2 if you truly learn all about the enzymes for all the pathways and what they can do. However, since i don't personally know your work ethic, i guess it is possible to do biochem on your own. It was easier personally for me though to be "forced" to learn the material for tests and homework assignments.

in terms of your organic situation, I am not sure if possible but if youre desparate to get it out of the way next semester, try to find a community college or something you can quickly enroll in and take it there? it might be too late at this point haha but, as mentioned above, its a good idea to have solid ochem 1 foundation before moving on to 2!

Good luck mi amigo, all will work out for you

Yeah I definitely need the structure of a class to learn haha.
