I studied engineering a while ago (7+ years now) and so completed a few prerequisites 10+ years ago (chemistry, physics) and did well in them.

Problem is, I pretty much don’t remember anything from those courses. Would it be frowned upon for me to retake the courses, even though I got As in them? I’m mostly worried in terms of a) MCAT prep and b) preparation for Orgo. I’ve come to peace in terms of paying extra money for classes I’ve already taken—I sort of figure that if I’m gonna make the jump to medicine, I should properly learn (or re-learn) this material. Another fear, though, is risking doing worse in those classes second time around...

Also, would both sets of courses count for my GPA calculation? Or would the latter “nullify” the former?

if it has been 10+ years, you SHOULD retake them; some schools have "expiration dates" on prerequisites (i.e. within the last 5 years or so)
both would count toward your GPA calculation, though the most recent attempt would carry more weight, not necessarily in the numerical sense, but it represents your current level of academic performance

I had the same situation - very old grades. I agree that 10+ is definitely old enough to merit just retaking.

I took all pre-med pre-requisites afresh, regardless of the past grade (I only had bits and pieces originally anyhow). And then both grades contributed to my GPA calculations. Especially in Biology, stuff is changing fast - there was new stuff that wasn't in my original Bio class first go around.
