retinal specialization

I was just wondering as to how selective the fellowship programs are in ophtho. Is becoming a retinal specialist or something along those lines extremely difficult?

Not extremely difficult but still competitive.

How long are these programs? Can they be combined with the typical 3 year program somehow? I'd like to be done with my residency before I'm 35!
