Hello,

Does a retrovirus contain the enzyme reverse transcriptase prior to infection or is the enzyme produced after infection?

No. Trivia like that would be in the passage, and they are unlikely to ask such a simple question about it.

They're more likely to ask something like

Where are bacteriophage reverse transcriptases manufactured?
A, rough e r
B, viral ribosomes
C, bacterial ribosomes
D, plasma membrane

An example question off the top of my head would be;

A new ground breaking retroviral therapy has been developed. The therapy is able to destroy reverse transcriptase in the viral capsid. It has shown great effect in neutralizing (-) RNA viruses preventing them from replicating. What effect would this new therapy have on a retrovirus.

a) The retrovirus would also be neutralized since the retrovirus is dependent on the reverse transcriptase in the capsid to create a (+) strand RNA.
b) The retrovirus would not be affected since the retrovirus is a (+) RNA virus, it is able to produce reverse transcriptase from its genome using the host machinery
c) The retrovirus production cycle would be delayed increasing the eclipse period, with a lack initial reverse transcriptase there will be a delay before its genome can be incorporated into the host cell
d) The retrovirus would not be affected since retroviruses are reverse transcriptase independent, retroviruses utilize their own DNA genome and DNA ligase to incoprorate their genome into the host cell.
