Okay so i want some supplemental books, to read along with the books that we'll have to buy for class..

what are some good ones? I dont know which ones are good and which arent, but i've narrowed it down that the BRS Biochem book is fulla crap cause there's so many errors in it.. but i have a question... most errors mentioned were in the question reviews... are there errors in the actual factual information? like the cycles are wrong or something?

i mean there are so many out there, 1st aid, Netters, BRS, i dont know which ones to get...

let me know what are some good books to get to help get through first year!

First Aid and Kaplan's Step I review are excellent high yield study guides. It always helps to take a peak in one of those to clarify what exactly you'll need to know for boards of all the details you'll need to know.

I bought BRS on the advice of the other people in my lab.

Rather than buying two sets of books ("required" and review), I would suggest buying books that upperclassmen, or people on SDN suggest. At my school, and most others I've heard about, the stuff you NEED TO KNOW is in the lecture notes and the books that the profs recommend are just the fluffy versions of your notes so you can get some background information for what you're learning. So instead of buying two books just buy the one book that everyone seems to find useful. You're not going to have time to read two books for each subject (that is if you find out that you do any reading out of text books at all 1st year). Heres a few recommendations from my experience:

Histology - Wheaters's Functional Histology
Physiology - linda costanzo's big Physio Book (not just the review)
Pathology - big Robbins

the standard review books that you'll probably use again for year 2 (along with Step 1) are the BRS books. Getting Step 1 books so early in the game probably isn't going to help you. Most people who get overly excited and bought Step 1 prep books as a M1 or early M2 usually said they ended up not touching them until the end of M2, when they HAD to start studying for the boards (didnt have time to get around them during the school year).

Also, be careful about buying too many books. 1, max 2, books per class is more than enough. Having too many resources make it hard to go through 1 GOOD resource thoroughly. I went a little crazy and bought 3 books for physio last year (and ended up really using only 1)...could have saved some $$.

The only book I've heard that is recommended for 1st year is BRS Physio. Really, review books are for review. They won't help you unless you have already learned the material.

Lippincott for Biochem is pretty good for clarification, but it also has errors. I didn't use it much, though, since our Biochem syllabus was all I needed to do well in the class.

I heard that BRS Physio is good for review, although I focused on the syllabus.

Netter's atlas for anatomy is excellent. Definitely buy it. They key to doing well in Anatomy is to have a good mental picture of the area you are studying. Looking at Netter and other atlases will help you with this.

Clinical Neuroanatomy Made Ridiculously Simple is also pretty good...but you might want to browse through it before you decide to buy it. Some people don't like the style of the book...I personally only used it for reference or clarification. They have some good lesion questions, which I went through to practice for exams.

I hope this helps! Good luck with M1 year!
