So I never really start threads on SDN, but I had to this time. While I was reviewing my Certiphi background check that the AAMC uses I found a few mistakes. Apparently someone with the same name and birthday as me had been convicted of two felonies and his records just showed up on MY records!

So just as advice, check them carefully no matter how squeaky clean you guys think you are.

@Rik1111 This isn't a joke, man. Could you imagine if this happened to you? Reported to the mods. Hope you get banned, jerk.

How did you find this out? How can one check what the school sees?

If you are accepted or waitlisted at a school that uses the Certiphi background check, you will receive an email from them and submit information so they can conduct the background check. Once the background check is returned they will send you another email indicating you have some time period (I think 10 days) to review and contest the results if necessary before the report is released to schools.

Well this didn't turn out well. Back to not making threads lol

On the contrary, it was a great tip, especially for people with common names. My ex had that same issue, someone with his name had a bunch of drug charges and felonies, and it showed up on a background check.

Don't let a few bad eggs get you down 😉

how much was the background search and can you share the link on this forum?

Lol, I'm pretty thankful my last name is uncommon and isn't something like Miller or Williams.

Though there is an athlete with my first & last name who's regionally known, I guess.

It's Certiphi and it's done through AMCAS for schools participating in the AAMC background check. Accepted applicants do it starting in January and I'm pretty sure there's no fee if you just do it through that.

Check your email for an email entitled "AMCAS Background Check Information" or something similar. I got this email in August 2011, and it introduces applicants to the Certiphi background check. There was a link in there if you wanted to do the background check in advance for a fee. Maybe they don't email this out anymore, but check your email from August. I'd include the link they sent me but it had "2012" in the URL so I'm pretty sure it won't work.

Mine says: (with links redacted)... PM me if you want the links but I don't think they really matter...

"As you were notified in the AMCAS application, you have applied to at least one medical school that is participating in the AMCAS-facilitated Criminal BackgroundCheckService, through which Certiphi Screening, Inc. (a Vertical Screen(R) Company) will procure a background report on applicants with certain types of admission actions.

Backgroundchecks will begin after January 1 for all conditionally accepted applicants, except for Early Decision Program (EDP) applicants. If you were conditionally accepted under the Early Decision Program, your backgroundcheck will begin immediately upon your conditional acceptance.

If you are placed on a participating school's alternative list, that school may request that a backgroundcheck be procured.

When your backgroundcheck is started, Certiphi Screening, Inc. will send an e-mail with additional information to your preferred e-mail address. To ensure that you receive this communication, please:

"list of stuff here"

For a fee, you may procure your own report from Certiphi Screening, Inc. in advance of the AMCAS-facilitated report.

Please note that this optional report is not required and it does not take the place of the report to be procured for medical schools.

For additional information, including details regarding the consumer report to be procured, go to Certiphi's web site. "

thanks. I did my check yesterday.waiting for results
and yes, the link provided for specific to all applicants applying this cycle.

By now, background reports are standard operating practice, including for early decision program applicants once they are accepted and on all other applicants at the point of acceptance after January 1. You have ten calendar days from the date you receive your background check report to review it before it is sent to your designated medical school(s). If you do not review the background report, then the report will be sent out after this period elapses. Certiphi Screening, Inc performs the background check for AAMC and no other background search service will be accepted by the AAMC. So, it very important to review your background report within the 10 days. Some background reports have mixed up similar student names and contained erroneous information.
