Hi guys,

So I'm currently an honors student working on a thesis, and I've been accepted to a few schools already.

I've been dealing with some really stressful personal issues recently, and on top of that, my honors work is really dragging me down. Over the course of the semester, I've also realized that I really dislike research now, and I'm not sure that it's for me. I can't imagine myself working on this all year, and so I'm considering withdrawing from honors. I know it won't affect my ability to graduate, but would med schools consider revoking my acceptances if I don't graduate with honors like I indicated on my app?

I know it's probably unlikely...but I just thought I'd ask.

Thanks in advance!

I think the best thing to do would be call the schools you've been accepted to and ask anonymously. Anything given here will be opinion. I know that being accepted gives one the worst case of senioritis ever on top of any personal problems one might deal with.

Good luck with this!

Hey guys! Thanks for the feedback.

I ended up calling one of the schools I was accepted to and asked them about it. They said that withdrawing from honors shouldn't affect my acceptance status, but when I asked if I should send them an update letter, they said to do that.

I'm in the same boat about research. In the last 4 months, I've had 0 progression. I was given a hand-me-down project that 1 post-doc and 1 graduate student already abandoned. So for the past year, I've pretty much beaten my head against a wall.

As to personal stories, I've heard that most medical schools don't care. You do, however, need to send the updated status to them. Normally, it won't hurt you, but I've heard a few students being forced to defer. IIRC, one student was a double major in Biochemistry/English, and she dropped her biochem. major after she was accepted. The medical school told her that it was a significant issue, so that she needed to still grab the degree. It turned out to be a forced deferment, which wouldn't be too bad. Just think, 1 last year as an undergrad, no research... Life would be like a normal student (non-engineering at least)!

Another word of advice, make sure it won't change your graduation. For my biochem BS, I have an 'an, or' statement that places me in a predicament: 3 consecutive semesters of research and a successful defense OR enrollment and completion of Biochem techniques.

Good luck, and grats on the acceptance!

i met 2 medical students (at UVA if that matters) that graduated from my state school, dropped out of the honors program. can't say i haven't considered joining them

Good to know. I've heard that the honors office gives you a hard time when you talk to them about dropping the thesis, but if it'll make your life easier and med schools are okay with it, go for it. 🙂

I was contemplating writing a thesis for a long time before I finally succumbed to laziness and decided not to.. but now I have to take care of my ULWR to graduate...

Thanks for the advice! Yeah, I know it definitely won't affect my graduation. I will send an update letter out though.

They actually didn't give me a hard time at all once I explained to them why I was doing it, so that worked out well. 🙂

Take ENG 325 for ULWR! I took it last year--one of the most amazing classes I've taken in undergrad. I learned things about writing that I never even knew existed haha.

I've been considering doing the exact same thing OP. Except I'm suffering from something called "laziness."

Im in the exact... same.... boat. I took on the thesis project to help my chances so I would feel guilty dropping it now that I'm accepted. Besides, it may help build a background for research in med school (most med students aren't published).

Do you think you could still get published if you don't do a thesis? I'm actually still continuing the research, cuz it's a pretty cool project, and since it was my idea...I don't wanna just ditch it. And I'm still going to write a paper on it and submit it to a journal for publication. I just won't be writing the mondo thesis anymore. Think about it 🙂

I don't see any reason to update them. All they will ask for is your final transcript and most likely won't even realize you didn't write your thesis.
