Hi Guys,

I was wondering if you recommend that I rewrite my MCAT. I have a 12PS/8VR/12BS (32) on my MCAT currently. I applied this past cycle with a 3.85 cGPA and good ECs and reference letters but didn't get an interview so far (I'm still waiting on hearing back from about 6 schools). I feel that the 8 in verbal is holding me back.

I was thinking about rewriting the MCAT this summer to increase my verbal score, but wanted to know what you guys thought of this/what you recommended.

Thanks!

I'm in a similar position as you. Do you mind elaborating on the schools that you applied to? As in, how many schools and how broadly did you apply?

I got a 6 in verbal and I've been fine in terms in interviews and acceptances. It's mostly my ECs and LORs pulling me through though

Depending on your ECs and LORs I don't think you should retake the MCAT. Too much work.

Did you interview at/get accepted to MD or DO schools?

Also if I'm a Canadian do you think my score is still fine?

Where are you from (just state)? What is you BCPM?

And I don't know if the 8 on VR is getting you screened out of the top schools.

I'm from Canada, and my BCMP was 3.80 (3.56, 3.90, and then 4.00)

Retake that perfectly competitive score and so help me I'll reach through your monitor and smack you upside the head!

Would it still be a competitive score if I'm a Canadian applicant? Because I applied to 30 schools (I was complete on the first day), but haven't gotten an interview yet, only rejections 🙁

Your problem is not the MCAT (if that's your only one). It's the fact that internationals have an uphill battle for an MD interview. Only 300 internationals matriculated anywhere in 2014 (1901 applied). https://students-residents.aamc.org/applying-medical-school/article/applying-international-applicant/
It's time to consider a DO application (especially if you have multiple MCAT scores).

This is from the link you provided: "In 2014, 1,901 foreign applicants applied to M.D.-granting programs in the United States and 409 of those applicants were accepted."

That's brutal! So I'm quite ignorant on this. @gyngyn , why aren't there more Canadian med schools? It seems like a significant amount of well qualified individuals gets rejected simply because there are not enough seats.

And only 300 matriculated. This could mean that they got into a school in their home country, or that insufficient funds were available for them to start in the US (no co-signer) or any number of other reasons.
It's expensive to train doctors. 1901 includes applicants from all countries, not just Canada. Each country needs to balance the need for doctors with their ability train them to the level expected in their country.

Not sure how it is for Candadian's..but yes I had interviews and acceptances to MD schools.

I would research MSAR for the MCAT Verbal 10th to 90th percentile category. Apply to schools that have 7, 8, and a few 9s as their MCAT Verbal 10th percentile. Excluding close ties with a school, I wouldn't bother applying to schools with anything above that.
