The further they get from the pencil line = the more opportunity they have to separate. If your unknowns have Rf values of 0.2 and 0.1 you are less certain that everything is completely separated than if they have Rf values of 0.3 and 0.2. Imagine having a fancy ink pen that didn't always write in the same color. If you draw a line that is 3cm long you have a better chance of seeing all the different colors than if you draw a line that is only 2cm long.
Think of it as percentage. 0.2 is 100% faster than 0.1. 0.3 is only 50% faster than 0.2. The larger difference in speeds (100%) will give you a better separation.
