Hey! Sorry if I am reposting an acceptance thread, but I didn't see one when searching. Wanted to try to gather all the RFU-AP 05-06 students into one thread. And also wanted to see where everybody else is living considering my unique situation.

University of Michigan (hometown newport coast, CA) living in a townhouse in gurnee, and although I timed a 12 min drive to the school I am a bit worried about the times in the winter, especially since my car is rear wheel drive.

Other RFU-AP'ers, check in!

Hey I am checking in! I am from here in Chicago. I live in a suburb about 20 miles from the campus and I am debating about moving closer to the campus. I am very familiar with Highway 176, make sure you time your drive in traffic. 176 can be gridlock in the morning. Anyways enough about that. I have been out of school for a while and this will be the start of a 2nd career, I am 32. I have been up to the campus and I have met withsome of last year's AP students. I am really excited to get going.

Hi guys,

I am signing up🙂

I am from North Cali, will be moving in the weekend before orientation don't know where yet🙂 I will be in the area first week of July.
Rear wheel car here as well and thinking abt winter conditions - it will be fun🙂

Have a good one

Hey...I will also be attending RFU-AP. From Sacramento, UCLA '04...#90 on the waitlist for off-campus housing, but tentaively have something setup in Gurnee. Hope to meet all of you soon.

From so cal and will be moving out there the weekend before orientation. Stressing about a place to live. Anyone need a male roommate hit me up.

Congrats all! It will be exciting to meet everyone in the program. I've moved a lot in my short life so I'll stick to the past few years. Most of the last four I've spent in Urbana-Champaign (at the U of I), currently in the northwest suburbs of Chicago and moving to Waukegan in mid July. 🙂

Hello All !!

I am excited about starting the AP program and meeting all of you during orientation. I am from Chicago (Downers Grove) but will move closer to school. I am a non-trad and married and this will be a big career change for me. I am especially worried about the massive drop in income that my wife and i will face when i quit my job and go back to school.

See you all during orientation !!

MYG

I'm from Boston--never been to Chi-town. I'm going to try and visit next weekend to check out a few places. So far, I've called 'The Woodlands', 'Forest Pointe' and 'Deer Valley'. Um, are we going to be living in the boon-docks? This city girl is going to need some re-adjusting. 😉

whattup all!

I'm 23/F from Fla/CO. I'm gonna be living in the Woodlands. If any of you end up there feel free to stop by for a chat, cup of sugar, whatever... 😉 3506 108B

I LOVE Chi town but I'm a little bummed about the area at RFUMS. Theres nothing up there! You have to drive 10 min on the freeway to get to a grocery store! Its deff quiet. But I suppose thats a good thing....its close enough for a day trip but far enough to avoid being a distraction. Still, I wish there was more of anything around there....well...besides more emtipness.

I'm moving up July 4th weekend...If anyone's up there around that time and wants to go to Chi town or furniture shopping, PM me

Originally from Nor Cal and have been in LA for the last 6 years finishing undergrad at UCLA and working in the lab.

Unfortunately I may have to break the distance from downtown to North Chicago since my new wife (we're getting married in 23 days!) will probably be going to NWestern Law.

So far I've been told to live around Evanston and take the train up while she takes the L down. If anyone has better ideas of what city would be better please let me know. Also what internet sites are you using to find apartments? So far I've only used Craigslist. Unfortunately I won't be able to go to Chicago until a week before orientation starts because of work.

Anyone freak out taking out $56k in loans?? I'm sending the financial aid in and it's just scary b/c I've never even made that much in my LIFE yet.

Hope to see you guys soon.

Hi Giorgeo,

Evanston is a good choice to break up the commute. Just make sure to pick an apt near the METRA (commuter train line) (www.metrarail.com). I would use the following sites to check out apt complexes, www.apartments.com or www.rent.com .

Let me know if you have any questions and congrats on your wedding !!

I'm not an AP (but former AP-->M1A). Since I noticed some posts are looking to move in the weekend before orientation..... I have an apartment and looking for a female roommate. I got screwed by the person subletting my roommates room. Originally he told me he'd be out by the July 18th so I agreed to the sublet. Now he's asking for more time......... arrrrgggghhhh!!! It won't be available for you to move in big pieces of furniture until July 26th, but you can personally be in earlier. We will be shampooing the carpet before then, so you can move infurniture, just may have to prop them against the wall. PM me if anyone else is interested. I promise to help you get settled in during orientation, as I know you don't have much time to get settled.

About grocery stores, there are some closer than you think (dominicks is a 5 min drive on town roads from school and jewel is about an 8 min drive town roads). After you guys get settled PM me and I'll give you directions; if it's after July 19th I can actually personally lead the way for you. If you are going to be here before orientation and looking for furniture, ask for student prices. As for beds, American Mattresses in Gurnee has a deal with the school that gives pretty good prices. What I did last year was take the quote from American Mattress (they sell Sertas), and asked for something comparable at Bedding Experts (Seelys). Then I asked them to beat the price. Anyways, I got a Queen size Seely Stateside for $380 after taxes, and had them throw in free bed frames, delivery and set up! Use that as a reference!

I'll be living about 2 seconds away from six flags.... Outside of chicago I guess thats the best thing the area has going for it. But at least I know where I'll be celebrating at the end of the school year... well aside from Rush Street. 😉

hmmm..how far is that from the school? When I went to visit I didn't see anything interesting in the area...

im going to be in the area fri 6/17 and sat 6/18--pm me if u want to meet or can suggest any restaurants/bars/etc I can go to w/my sister (she's 27). thanks!

Hey, guys! I can't wait to meet all of you in the fall. I'm 23/F from Tennessee. So far, I have no idea where I will be living, but I am trying to get that together. I was going to try for student housing, but I don't think that will happen since I'm probably at the very bottom of the waitlist. Anyway, I'm really looking forward to getting to know you all. Hopefully, we will be able to fit in some good times, along with all of the studying next year!

Its about 10 miles north of the school in Gurnee (ironic name for a med school student) Thats pretty much it though, aside from a mall and reguar stores (best buy, sears, walmart, etc)

has anyone recieved anything sice they sent in their intent to register and check? Youd think we'd get something that let us know about orientation and schedule and stuff.

Hey people,

Congrats anyone who needs furniture... my classmates (i willbe a 4th yr) have our own bulletin board and i know people want to sell their furniture. Be wise dont spend a lot of money cause you will have to move before 3rd yr to downtown (which is a lot more fun). Here is a link to our Board.... http://pub20.bravenet.com/forum/1638314551

Also if you guys have any questions PM me. I am willing to help those who are following in my footsteps.

Remember to show up ready to study hard. Work your tail off. Nothing is worse than falling behind and needing a 98% on your physio final. HIstory states you wont make.. BUILD a lead.. and then you can cruise if need be. BEST OF LUCK!

I think classes start August 1st, and orientation begins on July 27th.

hey guys, congrats to all the future APers. as a former AP and soon-to-be M2 i know its not going to be an easy transition moving out to north chicago and having to study your ass off. but good luck to you all and i look forward to meeting you guys in August.

24/M from Ventura, CA (So-CAl). I graduated from UCSB with with a bio degree. I am living in the Woodlands Phase 2. I have some family in the area so it should be cool to see em every once in a while on the breaks.

Peace, love, and rock n roll

hey all,

i am starting the AP program at RFU this august...i am thinking of moving into the Woodlands, but they have no units available for me to look at...and i don't really want to sign a lease without having seen the place i am signing for. so my question is, does anyone currently stay at the woodlands in a 1-bedroom apartment (Phase 1 or Phase 2)? if you wouldn't mind, could my wife and i take a quick look at your apartment, just to get an idea of what it looks like (aside from the floor plan and pics online)?

we also are wondering about some of the other posts about the woodlands phase 1...are there really insect problems? is the apartment decent, but just the building itself is old? or is the inside of the apartment old and gross, too?

and lastly, we are also looking at apartments at northern crossing. my wife works and will be taking the car, so i will need a way to get to school...i know that i can take the bus to get to RFU (2 buses, actually) from northern crossing -- has anyone tried this, and is it convenient, or does it take forever to get to RFU by bus? also, has anyone taken an apartment at northern crossing, who would be willing to carpool? i would split the cost of gas, etc. with you if you are able to offer me a ride from northern crossing to RFU.

thanks!

ooh, good question. i will be in town saturday and would love to check out an apt at the Woodlands myself (1BR). i will have a car.

Hi!

Congrats on everyone making it to the program!

I am 28/M and originally from Chicago, but lived in So Cal for 3 years.

I will be moving to my parent's house and commuting. My driving time is gonna be around 25 minutes... I think...

By the way, for those of you who are planning to move here and commute to campus by 94/294, you will have to purchase this thing called ipass. Its a gadget for paying tolls, but you will pay double with cash.

I can't wait to start this thing!

Hi,

Where will you be commuting from ?

Thanks

make sure you are getting the Medloans ALP (alternative Loan Program) if you are still having some problems contact the Financial Aid department they are quite helpful.

Anyone know what status is of phase 2 apartments in Woodlands? My housing lead in Gurnee fell through and I am looking for a place to live. I am heading out to the area on July 15th...22/m/ns. I also heard that as far as apt's close to the school, Northern Crossing and Woodlands were the only two really worth looking at. Can anyone offer some info on these other places in the off campus housing .pdf?

Lake Bluff - Forest Pointe and Deer Valley
Waukegan - The Lakes at Fountain Square, Briarwood, Emhurst Lake
Gurnee - Pembrook Club, AMLI at Osprey Lake

Thanks.

yeah call their (medloan) number and tell them the medloan app isn't coming up for the website. They will approve you right over the phone. Thats what I did and it took about 5 minutes. 👍

Hey, I looked in greys lake, as well as waukegan and found a few places, but my major problem with both of those were distance from the med school and time of travel. I eventually settled on buying a place in gurnee in a sub called Heather Ridge. Mostly because the property was decent and it was a short drive (12 min) to the school. It was frustrating though because south of the school seemed like nothing unter 300k and a lot of the places north of the school are pretty ghetto. Good luck and let us know what you end up with. 🙂

ooo thanks a lot mperor...I'll take care of that tomm..=)

ugh...taking out 38 grand(at least!) for a loan feels pretty scary....

hey Narv007 (and any other apt hunters), I just got back from checking out places. I found a 1BR at Northern Crossing that I loved, but I got really lucky in finding it. I checked out Deer Valley (same owners as Forest Pointe), Pembrook Club, and the Woodlands. From what I hear, the Lakes at Fountain Square are ghetto, and Briarwood is really lacking in amenities. Pembrook Club was nice, though a longer drive from the school. Deer Valley was nice, but really outdated (cabinets, appliances, etc from the 80s). I hated the Woodlands. I would only suggest living there if you don't have a car and need to walk to class. To be honest, Northern Crossing was BY FAR the nicest place I saw. It is a gated community w/every feature and amenity that you could want. If they have an opening, I would seriously just take a leap of faith and put a deposit ($150) down over the phone. JMO...

Hey, I'm glad you found something you liked. 🙂 Hope you had a good time in Chicago over the weekend.

Getting from the airport to campus without your own ride is pretty difficult. The school may provide a shuttle. I am not sure. I am from Chicago. When are you arriving? Here is a link to some directions to the campus:
http://66.99.255.20/phonebook/
look at the "From East" directions
You could live off campus but without a car you will need to work out some carpool or something which should not be to hard with all the students around. You can PM and I can give you more inf or help you out with a ride or something.

Hey y'all..congrats on those who got into this program..it's wonderful if you work really hard! I am selling my furniture since I'll be going back to Texas for school. I have all the bare necessities (including the best bed ever) and more. If interested, PM me.

txko 😀

Hi guys,

Almost time for school! I've found some apartments in Evanston and was wondering if anyone has experience taking the shuttle that runs to the Lake Bluff Metra station. I unfortunatley have to commute so I'm wondering how reliable the shuttle service is. The station is 2 miles from campus so it's no walk in the park. Let me know your experiences, thanks!

Hey everyone...my question is about cars for the North Chicago area. I was wondering if those who braved the winter at RFU could post what kind of car they used and if they had any problems with snow, rain, etc. Would a reliable car (civic/corolla) suffice or should I look into cars with all wheel drive (subaru)? Thanks.

i've liveed in the chicago area my whole life...civic/corolla definitely would suffice (my sister bought a corolla for herself yesterday in fact) the local towns do a good job of getting snow off the major roads quickly...side streets are another story, but i woudl think u'd be set w/ one of those. also the past few winters have been lower on the snow, usually just 1-2 larger snowfalls so u could cross your fingers taht that continues...maybe a tiny benefit of that whole global warming thing

Yo, I have been driving my civic for years in chicago and i will commute to school with it. You should not have any issues. No need for an impreza or any other 4x4.

I bought a corolla last year, and I originally came from the central valley in Ca (no snow there at all)........ I did just fine. 😀

Hey y'all,

Everyone should live in the Woodlands if they can! You won't have to worry about what kind of car you drive, etc..2 min walk from campus

Also, Evanston is painfully far. Taking the train from Evanston is not ideal at all. Is there any way you can live closer?
