Out of curiosity, how does being a finalist or winning such scholarships as Rhodes, Truman, or Marshall affect your chances at medical schools? Would this increase or decrease your chances?

If I had a 3.8, excellent extracurriculars, but a mediocre MCAT like a 32 (relatively mediocre compared to Ivies), would I have no hope at Ivies if I was solely relying on the fact that I won one of these scholarships?

Thank-you so much!!

How would winning a highly-selective, nationally recognized scholarship hurt your chances for admission?

I don't know how much winning one of these awards will help (maybe a lot, maybe only little, you'll have to ask an adcom to find out), but the name recognition of these scholarships is second-to-none.

I'm gonna go out on a limb and say that winning the Rhodes is extremely baller and will catch the attention (in a positive fashion) of any adcom worth its salt.

I have a question - if I were a national finalist for one of the aforementioned scholarships, but did not get selected for it...should I state this on my AMCAS? Or should I just not even mention it?

If I were to win one of these, and I wanted to take a year off keeping my acceptance, would adcoms take this negatively saying we need to give him a year off type of thing?

You should definitely list being a finalist, as I think this is very impressive in itself. Winning one of these scholarships would obviously be a huge boost to your application. Also, most if not all medical schools would be extremely receptive to deferral for the purpose of pursuing study under one of these scholarships.

Do you to what extent these scholarships might help me? I have a 3.8...I don't know my MCAT yet, but my dream school is Dartmouth...I am aiming for a 34+. As far as extracurriculars go, I think I admission committee will be impressed. I am a little worried about that GPA...my sGPA is around a 3.75

You're right around their average so I would worry more about your EC's and MCAT than your GPA

As a fellow finalist for one of these awards (who as already finished applying), you should most definitely put down that your were a finalist. It is a very standard thing to do. Even the "rejection" letter from the foundation said, just by becoming a finalist is a huge honor and should be put on your resume.

I'll say that committees are very receptive to the fact you were a finalist. Though it won't make anything a sure thing.

Ok, sounds good! I think I will put it on my AMCAS.

Just a little story - nominated for the Truman...and I will know in February if I will be a finalist or not.
Rhodes - this one is such a gamble. But, there has been talk that I will be nominated from my university. Should I mention this on my app?

I don't think being nominated is really worth putting on your application frankly.
I think it is only worth putting down if you actually become a finalist.
