I was looking at the cost of attendance at USC pharmacy and it is $73,000+ for the first year! Tuition alone is already $45 k and they charge stupid fees like graduate plus loan processing fee - $900.

The interest rate for graduate plus loan is 7.9%. Therefore, the $900 processing fee in the first year will become $1,219 in 4 years!

There is also another $300 processing fee for stafford loan. So it costs almost $1200 per year in graduate plus and stafford loan processing fee. No wonder new graduates are willing to work for less. This hurts everyone.

What a joke, even if I had some rich uncle that gave me 20k a year for the next 4 years I still wouldn't go there.

Only idiots would now pay that much money to attend a pharmacy school for poor job prospect. So, can we safely say that people who go to U$C pharm school are idiots?

I'm guessing that some students attend USC in order to live close to home instead of having to move closer to UCSF, UCSD, or even out of state, minus those who were rejected by UCSF/UCSD and wanted to attend the next most reputable school.

At least USC is a top 10 school. What's more concerning is that some students are willing to pay the same amount in tuition and living expenses to attend much less reputable schools and end up with even worse employment prospects.

Damn, I would save that money and buy a beach house instead. Much better investment. 👍

Loan process fee is a scam... The loans are free to take. The school is basically charging you for a financial advisor's salary.

Go somewhere else, thats insane.

My school is 20K a year for tuition and fees this year. (Was 18.2k last year)...

I personally don't think anyone needs school, why can't we buy the books, study on our own time, and take a standarized test before we practice.

I feel that Americans in general automatically assume that paying a high price for something means that they are getting something better, without actually figuring out the true value and worth of that thing for themselves. Especially for things that we are always told are 'priceless', like education and health. Oh well, it just opens yourself to getting fleeced in this free market economy. 🙄

Yup, it is expensive. Incoming P1 here and I'm pretty sad about the loans I am taking out. Most of the Cali schools have the same tuition thought except with the UCs. Touro has 40k tuition and a 74k+ estimated cost of attendace. Loma Linda and CNCP have the same tuition of 41k. Western is the same as USC with a tuition of 45k. UCs are not cheap either when it is compared to other schools out of state. UCSF put their tuition at around 35k.

UCSF put their tuition at around 35k.

WOW is this a typo? In state tuition is usually like 10K to 15K. UNC is 14K and UGA is 15K. Is UCSF really that much for in state? I thought it would be more around 15K to 20K. Damn.

what a rip off.

Like I say. Go buy a beach house instead.

I am wondering now. How much is UCSF's out of state tuition?

This all depends on your state and how much the voters and legislators have defunded the public universities.

actually UNC is 19K w/fees and is actullay 1,000 bucks MORE EXPENSIVE that the MED SCHOOL per year. And this is for a more reasonably priced state school. I have no idea why people are still going into pharmacy in droves.... Guess they'll find out what they're in for when they get out 150-200k in debt. Its sad that things have become this absurd. When I was in school, PharmD programs were typically about 1/2 of MD costs, but now to have them cost more is just ridonk.

My bad. 14K was a few years ago. I forgot prices go up FAST!

I didn't know UNC Med school was CHEAPER than UNC pharmacy? I got accepted into UNC's dental program and I remember it being more expensive than it's pharmacy program.

I am confused now! LOL....😕

Med school is more expensive than pharmacy I thought....but I could be wrong.

However, I agree with you that people are stupid to take out 150K or 200K for a PharmD. What a huge waste of money.

I will be almost 100K in debt and that is a WASTE too! I could put a down payment on a foreclosed beach house for that much! If I could get a do over I would NOT recommend pharmacy school unless the degree is FREE. If it cost money then I would do something else.

I guess the image of pharmacy being "easy" money and guarantee six figures is still floating around! I wonder when folks will finally wake up? or will they?

No u r correct in the fact that dent is more, in fact DDS programs are often on par with or more expensive that MD programs (esp at state schools); might be b/c of Gov't subsidies. I still can't believe that less than a decade later, some people are paying more in tuition per year than I paid for 4 years😱

I always thought MD and Dent schools are about the same price and Pharmacy is cheaper.

But yes, some of the private NEW pharmacy schools are chargings A TON more. And the folks that attend those schools are suckers.

I paid 19K, 23k, 25K for my P1, P2, and P3 year of pharmacy school. That is because my college offer some merit scholarships.

I WISH I had gone to my state school UNC (but I miss the deadline to apply)...luckily I lived with my aunt for free during pharmacy school. But I still owe a pretty big debt!

I regret pharmacy school so much! And if I can't find a job I am gonna be so damn annoyed! I'll come on here and bitch everyday if I can't find a job! 😡

Overall I think we all agree on these points:

1) you're an idiot if you took out 150K or more in debt.
2) pharmacy school is a waste of time and money
3) pharmacy school tuition is the biggest rip off since pharmacy tech school. LOL
4) find another career and be smart.

feel free to add to this list. 🙂

If you take into account cost of living, it might be cheaper for CA residents to go to out-of-state schools (public or private) than to go to UCSF or UCSD, let alone the in-state private schools. You'll probably save money by moving out to the middle of nowhere as opposed to paying steep rents in San Francisco or La Jolla.

It's called quality of life and it's priceless, pal.🙄

There is no way, I would voluntarily live in the middle of nowhere after growing up in CA when I could be living vicariously in SF - going out to my favorite restos, hanging out with my family and best friends, pursuing a dancing degree while going to pharmacy school, hanging out with THE most amazing people - a friend of mine I chill with and met at UCSF was in this mega famous band, going to see world class exhibits in museums. All this to save 10 k a year ? I don't think so.

Most of my friends think the same way. I rather buy my property a few years later or not have an extra car/material pocession but living in the midst of it all, is what life is all about.

Chebs is right San Francisco is the most gorgeous city in this country period. If I had 1 or 2 million dollars to spend on a house I would move there now!

If only you seen some of the houses on the market right now in the Marina, freaken palaces. 🙁 Me and you, both need rich husbands, stat! :meanie: Working hard is good, working hard and having a rich husband at the same time is even better!

Girl I cannot AGREE WITH YOU MORE!!!!! We need to marry rich so we can both own palaces in NYC and SF! 😀

God, why am I still here in this box doing patient counseling!!!!!!!!! 🙄

Well, first we need our rich husbands to pay off our 100K student loans!

But then again, I'm one too if I don't get a job upon graduation.

I feel like a sucker for paying 36k per year ..and this is with scholarship and prices rising every year.

Girls are way too smart nowadays. They work hard and have a career then they expect you to pay off their student loans and not have to work. If things don't work out, they can get rid of you because they still have their career.

BUT with this approach, they need to spend years in school while their beauty fade. By the time they reach their late 20s, it gets harder and harder to find that rich husband. I know plenty of unmarried pharmacists in their early 30s. They were a good catch when they were younger but they waited too long.

Well, I ONLY paid for tuition my P1, P2 and P3 year since I live and eat for FREE those three years with my aunt. LOL...

It was nice having someone cook and clean after you for 3 years! 😉 My aunt is the best cook too!

You actually paid a lot more if you had to pay for rent, food, and living expenses. I did NOT.

🙁

I still look 20yo though....

Damn, I thought I paid too much for pharmacy school. If you come out owing $300K+ like you apparently would at USC, would a full-time pharmacist qualify for IBR?

If you go to USC or NYU dental school you can easily owe 400K+ coming out.

Waaaaay too much for ANY degree.

Man, don't get me started. Just paid off my wife's student loans to the tune of 170K a few months ago. Nothing like writing a check to the Dept of Ed for the price of a house. Oh well shes well on her way to making more than me soon so it's really not that bad of a deal.😀

Couldn't be more correct on that one. I have ventured over to the dent forums where they are saying the same thing, at what point does it become cost prohibitive or simply unethical for students to be saddled with this kind of debt. It seems like academia is fine with putting people in the hole for several multiples of their anticipated income (ie liberal arts major they'd like to see pay 100K+, pharmd 250K+, dentist 400K+). I know that basic econ would say charge what the market will bear, but this is an atypical situation where the fed provides a guarantee on a certain level of debt and then private sharks step in beyond that. I think if even the private loan people like sallie mae would stop allowing people to get in over the 18K or so in Fed loans per year, tuition would drop, especially if the fed lowered the cap to say 12K (and then they could further help by making interest rates even lower say 2-3%). Until then this will be the next bubble. I mean I know that there have been state budget cuts, but did they really go from funding x amount of dollars down to zero? Or have these sharp increases simply been done to maintain the posh pensions and fancy buildings? At least for now there are still some cheaper state school options, but I have a feeling they will only be cheap in 'relative terms' in the coming decade (i.e. 'UNC dental or pharm school is SOO cheap, it's only like 500K/yr, which is WAY less than the one million per year charged by a private school. AND who cares that people are making the same as back in 2012.")

I hope she doesn't dump you. I know a lot of people that pay off their spouse's loans and then get dump right after that. 🙁

It' already a bubble.

Recently, I notice lots of people who apply to pharmacy school are ex-pharmacy techs. Ex-techs just want to be a pharmacist just because it pays better. I guess for them it's better than getting paid $18/h. These techs don't know it's hard to get a pharmacist job now. You have to compete with 20 different applicants especially if you are not an intern and looking for jobs without any networking... Well, in fact most people are completely delusional about the job market nowadays. They still think it's 2004 where it used to be good... It becomes who you know that matters the most

A traditional Asian won't get divorce easily as Caucasians counterparts. In fact, Asian American has the lowest divorce rate.

Statistically, two professionals has a lower divorce rate than high school graduates. Higher education + over 25 years = less divorce rate. I can say he has a good chance of never getting a divorce.

Haha, we've been together for like 10+ yrs, plus I've never had a problem with women since I'm not your typical nerdy pharmD, so I'm not really worried:laugh:

Even if she did dump you tomorrow, you could likely address the recent large payment for student loan debt in the divorce settlement. I wouldn't be worried either... you probably didn't marry a gold digger anyway, right?

Some of the advice/opinions on this forum are so horribly off base and silly... like I would ever take financial advice from someone who has never supported themselves or marriage advice from someone who hasn't even been in a long term relationship, let alone married.

I am Asian. This is GOOD news. I never want to get a divorce. Unlike Jennifer Lopez and Kim Kardiahian etc. I actually think marriage should always and forever be FOREVER. PERIOD.

How many is a lot?

I know 3!

One was really SAD. This woman and her husband are regulars at my mom's restaurant. They been dating since high school. They got married and went to the SAME undergrad college...they apply for medical school together and got into the SAME medical school!!! They been together since they were 16 yo.

The wife however never went to medical school since 1) she assume she will be married to a doctor 2) it lowers their overall debt and 3) she really just want to be a stay at home mom.

Well she supported her husband all thru medical school. Pay the rent, food, some tuition etc. 6 months after her husband became a doctor he dumped her ass for a nurse. 😱

Really sucks for her, she is left with NO money (her husband just became a doctor so he isn't rich yet), NO degree, NO babies, NO NOTHING.

It really sucks to be her. She comes and cries to my mom all the time. This is a TRUE story I swear to God this happened and this woman is very pretty actually. Blonde hair and big blue eyes.

So sad...I pray this doesn't happen to me.

Haha, we've been together for like 10+ yrs, plus I've never had a problem with women since I'm not your typical nerdy pharmD, so I'm not really worried:laugh:

You're a hottie? 😉

n=2, which is statistically significant given the present population of the US:meanie:

I KNOW 3 PEOPLE actually!!!! 😛 And one with a story that would make me want to jump off a cliff and die if it happened to me.

I dated someone for 8 months before! That's long term IMO!

And I will be supporting myself starting Sept! Next month! 😛 Let's just hope I don't die with $4800 till Jan.

The point is I don't mind paying off someone's 200K student loans or supporting their ass thru school etc. That's all good and all...but as we all know there are NO guarantees in life. Marriage being one of them. You can support someone, paid off their debt, do anything for them etc. but they CAN still dump YOU and leave you with nothing and there really ain't **** you can do about it.

The dental school total is close to 410k not including cost of living. 👎

Go Optometry:

http://www.sunyopt.edu/education/admissions/od_program/tuition_and_fees
$19,900 per year

http://offices.nsuok.edu/admissions/TuitionFees.aspx
Residents = $6875.00 per year Non-residents = $13787.50 per year

But I don't want to be an optometrist...?

Besides, USC and NYU are the most expensive D-schools. My number one and two(UNC and GHSU) are about 107k. USC and NYU. They're our versions of the Caribbean. If you're smart, you'll get into a school that isn't financial suicide.
