Sadly, Neil Campbell passed away. He wrote the first four editions of 'Biology' himself, taking over 9 years to complete the first edition, and it certainly showed. Just about every pre-med worth his/her salt has read through that book, and I think I speak for many when I say its probably the best text you'll ever read. Thoroughly insighful and yet clear, concise and not laborious to read, I think it sets the gold standard for writers to aspire to.

So while you're busy filling out secondaries and making travel plans for interviews and picking out the right outfit to wear and the right things to say, take a minute to pay tribute to the man .

🙁 He taught at my school at one point. His books are great and I definitely learned a lot from them. I don't know much about him as a person, but I'm sure that he's a great man who was truly dedicated to education. He died too soon. We need more people like him. 👍 Thanks for posting this thread. I always liked Neil Campbell although I never met him- ever since my biology professors called our biology book "Campbell".

My brother used that book (my prof switched to a different text). I can't imagine spending nine years writing the book....no wonder they're so expensive.

They also have a limited market.

But hey - it is a racket now that I think about it.

I looked over at my books and reallized that my biology book was written by him. His book enabled me to miss my boring bio lectures. He did a great job writing the book. May he rest in peace...

fantastic text.

Never thought I'd hear about this, but I this is certainly not good news. It is a well-written text that covers so much of bio. We're all gonna be doctors, and for most of us that book laid the foundation for everything we'll be doing the next 50ish years or so.
Hope he rests in peace. He passed away too young (only 58?)

ohhh.... i feel sooo sad. 🙁 i absolutely love the Biology text he wrote. i've been using it ever since high school. during my misery studying through ochem, his book shed light into my life. i even copied the superb diagrams over while making my own notes and tabbed the text with different colors. not to mention that even till now, i'm making a living by tutoring bio based on the text. sad~ (okay... many of you are gonna think that i'm crazy... >< )

yeah, he was really young. i hope they keep churning out his textbook, since it was clearly the best. i used 2 other bio texts in college, and his was the easiest to read and had all the right info.
