You can major in anything, but nursing is generally frowned upon. Do the post bacc, or just go there informally and take the premed classes that you didn't take, volunteer, shadow doctors, and do well on the MCAT. And no you don't have to go back and do biology.

Thank you.. i have like 300 hours in volunteering at childrens hospital... going back now during december..., shadow drs.. bone marrow transplant, heart surgery, pancreatectomies/splenectomy... etc... so basically i will go back to school and put PRE -MED as major... and just take the classes needed... 🙂 thank you

Just to add...

Why did you choose to get your BSN? Was it always your intention to become a doctor? If so why take a spot in nursing school? Adcoms will want to know. Making a career change so soon after completing your BSN will seem rash and it will make them wonder if your decision to become a doctor is well thought out. I am not trying to say that it isn't or to cause any strife it is just this is how it will be viewed.

Also have you thought about NP or CRNA, more autonomy than a nurse with not as much responsibility as a doctor. Less schooling to boot.

You don't technically need to get another bachelors, you just need to fulfill the premed course reqs (bio 1/2, chem 1/2, orgo 1/2, physics 1/2 +/- biochem). Med schools require a bachelors and those courses - its not required that those courses ever count towards a degree. There are plenty of people who got a degree in English/history/whatever then spend a year+ taking care of those requirements.

The only caveat is that a BSN probably won't be given the same weight as a degree in biochem or chemical engineering or whatever.

Sorry if that is splitting hairs. Good luck.

Well i really appreciate your responses ,. a little about myself
I am a 22 y/o cuban guy who came here almost 6 years ago,, i live alone with my mom and we had gone through a lot ...graduated with honors in high school, honors in college and for me nursing is a way to get some money and help more my mom... i really want to be a dr but i am taking this route which is not the best one but for me is the one that might work.. i was accepted to 2 universities with full ride.. 🙂 one of the Drs that i shadowed told me.. "sometimes people underestimate those that change career from nursing to md... i think that every dr should have some degree in nursing .. so you will have both the nursing part and the md part which are the end have the same purpose which is provide care to those who need it".. i guess i will figure it out once the time come.. but hey .. the sky is the limit and why not to give it a try... if i failed .. i wont be that sad cus i will havce a RN degree..🙂

thanks guys.

Your story is very similar to my own I am an RN who wish to pursue medicine as well. Became an RN to help support my family, but I've always wanted to be a physician. I currently work in a critical care unit in a teaching hospital, and this experience has only increased my interest in pursuing medicine. Good luck to you!
