I decided to get serious a little late in life...I'm 26 next week. However, due to this great site..I have new hope. I went to EMT school and started working in the ED/ Trauma Center @ UF/Shands. Unfortunately, I was barely surviving so I needed to make more money. I am almost done with my ASN.

Working at the hospital surrounded by residents has solidified my desire to be a physician. I am wondering...would I be better off getting a BSN or BS in biology? I plan on working as a RN while I working on my degree. Unfortunately, I don’t have the luxury of bypassing the RN and being able to survive, so it’s a necessary stepping stone that will allow me to make a decent income, give me experience in the hospital, and the flexibility to continue school.

Any advice given will be greatly appreciated!

Id go with the bio degree save yourself some why not nursing trouble later on.

Here's the thing, the nursing degree will not cover all your pre-reqs for med school. The bio major probably will... However, the why not nursing thing will come up ANYWAY because you already have an ASN, sooo my thought is to possibly do a double major, or do the BSN with all the prereqs for med school now. The reason is, as a BSN you'll make way more money than with a bio degree, sooo might as well do what gets you the money before you go to school for medicine and have to be poor 😉

Are you planning on going to a nursiing school that gives the credentials to work after the first 2 years? If so, don't waste the BSN. Just go for bio. In my area, BSN doesn't get any more than RN and BSNs are typically for nurse managers.

Do you have family to support? If not, why not just take the student financial aid and push through without dividing your attention between work and school?

I've been working and taking classes. It makes this process much harder than it is for others.

In my area ASNs and BSNs are paid the same...If that is true in your case, just do the bio degree and work as a RN. That's what I did (except I'm a RT instead of RN) I went to school 4 days a week/ worked in the hospital 2 days a week (sometimes 3) and majored in microbiology. I *could have* got my bachelors in respiratory care (a useless degree if there ever was one), but it would have met almost none of the pre-reqs for medical school. This way pre-reqs covered, enjoyed the classes for the degree...although I doubt I would be a microbiologist if I don't get into medical school.

I'm in Mpls, and BSNs make way more than ASNs... The average 2yr RN starts around 22$/hr, and the average 4yr starts around 30$/hr... sooo, I guess it's dependent on location...
