Word on the street is that med school can be stressful. As someone who enjoys playing music to relax (I’m a drummer) I’m hoping to find a way of playing occasionally while in schools. I’m not expecting to tour over vacations, but jamming for a few hours most weekends would do me a lot of good. Anyone else have a similar goal?

Another rock drummer here ... I feel ya on wanting to keep playing throughout med school ... not looking to open up for the Led Zeppelin reunion but i do want to rehearse once a week and bust out the occasional show at local dive bar. I've interviewed at few med schools and at all of them current students have said that there are med student bands which play/rehearse regularly.

I'm a non-trad and worked in music for a bit before so it always comes up at interviews. While a few interviewers have said, "how do feel about having to give up playing music to pursue medicine?" the majority have said how they hope i continue playing and form a band at their school. so to make a long story short, i think playing in a band will be totally feasible in med school. sounds like third year is rough and tends to be the year when things like rock bands get put on hold, but otherwise it's not a problem. personally, i need to play to keep my sanity ... not sure i could hack the med school scene without being able to rock the kit every now and again.

One of my interviewers at an ivy league school was telling me how he occasionally jams out and is hoping to pay out at a few bars in the near future. I'm a guitar player and hope that I will find a bunch of guys to jam around with (maybe do some recording).

A couple of Penn students are in a band "Freaks of Nurture" and they even play gigs!

I stayed with a student host on one of my interview trips who was in a rock band.

I've heard competing things. Some of the medical students I've talked with have said variations on the "Pick Three" theme - i.e., picking three things you enjoy to do when you aren't studying (e.g., exercise, watching football, etc.). On the other hand, I've heard that there is so much information to be covered that every free minute is spent studying (as witnessed by the many pre-meds I see camped out in Panera, Borders, Starbucks and Barnes and Noble.

I think the best advice I can offer is to see what kinds of demands are on you during your first semester and see what kind of free time you may have (and to do this for MS-2, -3, and -4). If you can fit it in without hurting your studying, more power to you.
