AMG's often match in 1 of their top 3 programs but are usually safest with about 7 programs ranked.

How about for IMG's, generally speaking?

Longer or shorter list for IM compared to FM? how long?
7? 10? 15?

I would rank up to the point where not matching would be better than matching at that program. Even though I visited some stinkers on the interview trail, I ranked every one of them. Since the match favors applicants over programs, it shouldn't hurt your chances with your higher ranked programs to have a long ROL. At least, that's how I understand it.

I'm in a similar boat....AMG with below avg boards and avg grades. Going into IM....only interviewing at 8 places. Hope that's enough..guess i'll see in a couple months.

I heard.. for an avg applicant (board scores and grades) .. 5 for IM, Peds, Psych, PM&R and Fp. 8 for EM, OB, Surg, Neuro, and Path. If you are going into the more competitive fields like Derm, Rads, Rad onc, ENT, ortho, then you prob didnt get more than 10-15 interviews then you need to rank everyone you could see yourself at.

Thing is this is something that also depends on how personable you are (i.e. how did interviews go).

I have a friend with below avg step 1 and 2 (not reported) and avg clinical and preclinicals... got 20 Rads interviews.

Depends on your circumstances and what kind of vibes you got from programs when you were interviewing there. Going into OB/GYN. Applied to 30. Got 20 invites. Went to 9 interviews. Ranked 6.
