i posted this in the NRMP forum, but thought i might get some good answers here.

i am applying to radiology positions and have finished my primary and supplemental ROLs. my questions:

1. if i do not match with an advanced radiology position, will i be able to match to a prelim position on my supplemental ROL?

2. if i want to secure at least a prelim spot, will i then need to place my prelim spots on the bottom of my primary ROL?

3. if i do this and do not match to rads but end up matching to a prelim spot at the bottom of my ROL, will i be able to participate in the scramble?

thanks & best of luck to everyone.

1. You must match into the advanced program for which you created the supplemental list. If you do not match an advanced program, the supplemental lists do not kick in. If you do match into an advanced program and do not have a supplemental list, you will not match into the necessary first year of clinical experience (prelim/trans) and you will be notified by NRMP and you will have to scramble for that only.

2. Correct, if you want to match a prelim/TY year without having matched a rads spot, you will have to include these programs in your primary ROL. If you should rank them higher that a radiology program (why would you?) and match into the prelim/TY program, you would not be able to match at any program below that, so you should put these programs after any and all of your rads programs. If you matched your radiology program, the primary ROL stops there and proceeds to the supplemental, so you need to make sure you have a supplemental list picked out for each of your advanced programs.

3. You may scramble as long as you are registered and submitted an ROL without being withdrawn AND assuming you have not completely committed yourself to a clinical pathway. SO, if you matched categorical in whatever, you cannot scramble (i.e. you matched categorical IM as back up, no scramble). You may only scramble for what you need. That is, if you matched for prelim, you can only scramble for programs that are advanced. Once you match the first year, you cannot undo that committment in the eyes of the NRMP, so all categorical programs are out for that match/scramble year. Likewise, if you matched advanced, you can only scramble for first year programs that meet your needs (prelim something, TY, others). If for some reason there is a great categorical spot, you cannot switch to it.

Hope this is helpful.

thanks for the reply. so if i put 7 rads programs and 3 prelims at the bottom and match into a prelim, i will still be able to scramble for rads, correct? sorry just a little paranoid.
