We have away rotations third year where they set us up in dorm style housing with random roommates. I'm thinking this will be one of the worst parts - I haven't started yet but have all sorts of anxiety about living in a disgusting dorm, with shared hallway showers and a roommate living in literally the same room. Ugh..I'm not very adjustable when it comes to things like this and tend to be very private. The last thing I want to do when I return after a long day is be in a place where I feel totally uncomfortable. Any stories? Hopefully the six weeks will fly🙁

It depends on rotation, I did this on OB/GYN and my roomate and I rarely talked and it wasnt because we didnt like each other. When we did get home we were either studying or sleeping. We also had different call nights so half the time we werent even sleeping in same room. The key is just be respectful and if ANYTHING really bothers you mention it early and tell them to do the same to you so that the problem can be dealt with early, otherwise it will build into something more and spill into other issues.

I had an apartment-mate on my surgery rotation. We had separate bedrooms, but our neighbors next to her bedroom were noisy, so we ended up sharing for about half the rotation. We had different call schedules, so that meant we each had the apartment to ourselves twice a week. Whenever one of us had even a day over the weekend off, we'd go home because we both hated the town and our apartment. Despite the fact that I usually live alone, it felt a bit lonely when she had call or when she had gone home for the weekend.

I had an apartment-mate for an away in emergency medicine early in 4th year as well. We worked almost entirely opposite shifts, and I went away to a family event for a big chunk of my days off. We were almost never in the apartment at the same time.

I had a roommate during my peds nephro rotation in PA. I had a roommate who was doing a plastics rotation as an audition, so consequently I basically never saw him. however, when he was around we got along pretty well. We never really did anything together, but we'd talk in the evenings while we were around... it worked out well.
