Hello!I am very lucky and grateful to have been accepted to both Rosalind Franklin and the University of Illinois Chicago campus. I am an OOS student looking for some advice on which school would be best for me. UIC seems to have more prestige than Rosalind Franklin but has a significantly higher cost. Coming from the suburbs, the North Chicago location of Rosalind might provide a more campus-centered feel and make the transition less shocking. I am still unsure of what specialty I want to match into but am interested in emergency med at the moment. Any thoughts are appreciated!

Rosalind Franklin
Pros
  • Tuition and cost of living is significantly cheaper
  • Strong campus community, not really a commuter school
  • I love their interprofessional clinic

Cons
  • Lack of a teaching hospital (however, they do have very strong connections with Illinois hospitals due to how long they've been established so their rotations seem solid, I would likely just have to move closer to the city)
  • No substance use research
  • No emergency medicine residency (but can rotate through hospitals that do have EM residency spots)

UIC
Pros
  • Has a teaching hospital
  • Large center for substance use research
  • Emergency medicine residency

Cons
  • Significantly more expensive (89k OOS tuition, higher cost of living. Would ultimately cost around 100k more)
  • Feels a bit more like a commuter school
  • Larger class size (more students to compete with for research spots, etc.)

How much cheaper is Rosie? I hear great things about RF. U of I has lots of resources but if you’re wanting EM I don’t know how much those resources matter especially for a decently higher price. You could always do summer research

Rosalind is 20k cheaper tuition wise and factoring in cost of living would ultimately be ~100k cheaper. I've def thought about doing summer research and it sounds like their department of research can help find studies for you to apply to. They also do research through their clinic which could be interesting
