I'm a med student in the U.S. During our last year of med school (which I am now in) we can do international away rotations. I really want to see Delhi, so I'm trying to do a rotation there. I figure AIIMS is a good way to go, but I'm pretty much willing to do anything in Delhi just so I can see the place for a few months.

Anyone have advice on this? I've tried emailing AIIMS, but the email was returned, so I guess that email address is outdated. I'm not sure how else to go about it, other than emailing the attendings there, which might seem rude, right? Does anyone in Delhi have ideas about what I should do?

Thanks in advance!

hey there,

i did an elective in india (jammu to be specific) during my fourth year of med school. does your med school require you to go to a med school there or can you work with any attending? if you can get a hold of AIIMS or a big med school, great. if not, i'd try to find a family friend who is or knows a physician (perhaps in the field you plan to go into next year). that is the best way to work with someone, learn about your future field (and its need in india...maybe one day you could help out in a mission or something), and also makes paper work easy. my grandparents knew a very famous doctor who lived across the street from them. i got him to do the paperwork my school required and there were no hassles of unreturned or bogus e-mail addresses on the net. he also filled out an evaluation for me at the end via e-mail.

hope that helps.

go to AIIMS..go to AIIMS..go to AIIMS..
that's the only place with some international standing.
the other places are not worth it, unless you are the "let-me-be-Mother-Teresa" kind..
OR you are in it for a "good time"..in that case, delhi has a few really nice places, where people are not as tight assed as AIIMS about letting people rotate.like GangaRam, or Ram Manohar Lohia..and then there are the private "Ho"-spitals!

I'm really just going to have a good time in a different country. It doesn't need to be something impressive, it just needs to satisfy the international elective committee at my med school (and pretty much anything medical will satisfy that). It doesn't have to be with a med school or even a hospital.

What would be the best way to contact people from these hospitals in Delhi? I don't have any relatives or anything in Delhi, so that is out. I just really need some connection so that I can get this started.

Dude(ette), you are a med student from the US..it will be a piece of cake, turst me.here's what you do..
1) do a google for the hosp you want to go to(also, if you are thinking FUN, go to Mumbai/B'lore-delhi sucks donkey balls compared to them..like Grant/KEM/StJohns..or even JIPMER in Pondycherry-seriously a great place for both acad&party)
2)pick the prof you like, and search his research/ search some of the research going on in that hosp.
3)send an email/call(call is WAAAAAY more impressive) and say that you are a US Med student.were interested in this topic, and wanted to work under him, your prof told you about their research/work etc etc...the fact that you are an AMG,and want to work under them, and are calling will totally blow their mind-trust me!
seriously, the only problem you will face is the bleeding red tape..you will need to be persistent unfortunately..
